 The other answer is very good advice, just make friends initially.
If you are already friends then just wait till a moment alone and tell him that you like him. Even if he doesn't feel the same, any decent person will keep it to themselves if you ask him to. If you don't want his friend knowing, just asking him not to tell her should do the trick

 Instead of asking out straight away why don't you try to make a friend out of him. Befriend him, ask him if he had a nice weekend and what did he get up to. Or ask him what he is doing the following weekend. Throw in some light flirtatious gestures like some eye contact, some light touches and some smiles, and try to laugh at what he says. By doing this you are not steaming in and asking him out straight away & fearing rejection. Essentially you are gathering information, doing your homework if you like. You can also get a pretty good idea if someone likes you or not by the way he responds to you.
