 If you can just get a "hi" out of your mouth, or smile at him, it will open him up to talk. If you make yourself approachable, it will be a lot easier for him to talk to you. Guys in middle/high school are so painfully shy and terrible at talking to girls! So, if you can help him out and start the conversation things will get a lot better. Good luck, sweet!
