It does go on your medical record, but can't legally affect your employment rights as it would count as discrimination.

ty everyone for your posts, my mum told me thoug that if you discuss a mental problem with a doctor they have to put it on your record...which will affect a carrer in the future. She said my GP told this to her...is this true? if not, why would he lie? or why would my mum lie? tyxx

I think you do have an eating disorder. That said, you should be pleased that you've recognized that you have a problem and are willing to seek help. The first stop, and the best stop is your GP, who will be able to test you for any underlying illness, and give you all the advice you need. Good luck.

A female reader, GettingHelp South Africa +, writes (13 April 2010):

Yo-yo-ing weight combined with binge eating alternating with starvation would definitely be an eating disorder. I don't have personal experience in that area, but I do know a fair amount about healthy lifestyles.

It's so important to eat balanced meals & eat regularly.

The best way to make sure you're eating correctly without putting on too much weight is to eat five small meals a day rather than 3 big meals.

But each meal has to be balanced. For that you would need to see a dietitian probably.

Exercise is important but at your age I believe one only needs 20 - 30 min worth of exercise per day, but it must be every day. The first 15 min of exercise burns no fat - so if you really are concerned about your weight take an extra 15 min to warm up and then do cardio.

My guess is that ideally no-one should eat any unnaturally sugar foods, sweets, chips, chocolates etc. etc. but I think if it's in *moderation* its okay.

So maybe limit yourself to one square of chocolate a day, or one small packet of jellybeans or something. The way I understand it though, eating ANY of the foods that you binge on can cause you to binge again, and I've heard from many recovered bulimics (people who binge and then either laxative or vomit it out) that if they've had relapses when they eat the foods they used to binge on - so maybe if you binge on those foods you'll have to cut them out completely for a while? But I don't know.

You're obviously feeling that you have a problem, and if you want to solve it - it's important to recognize the problem. Well done!

It will certainly take a lot of help - go to see your family doctor/ any GP and maybe they can recommend a dietitian or another specialist that you may need. (I don't have personal experience in the area of eating disorders)

Its also going take support from the people around you. You are very lucky and seem to have a very supportive family - open up to them and don't be afraid to ask for their help. They will undoubtedly give it to you, along with the kind of moral support that will keep you motivated.

Whatever you decide to do - remember what made you right this letter and hold on to that - it will keep your inner motivation going.

You're a strong person to seek help and I seriously admire you for that. Continue to seek the help you need from professionals and don't be afraid.

I may not have personal experience but me and my friends are all pretty messed people and have supported each other through some pretty tough stuff - so if you need some more support - message me - I'd be glad to give you some more help.

Good Luck & Stay Strong
