 Why are you trying to get the whole thing in your mouth?! Unless you enjoy deep throating, it's totally unnecessary to go so deep. You just need to get a little past the head in your mouth, then let your hands deal with the shaft.

You shouldn't be going down as far as to choke at all, all our nerves are focused on the glans (the head) anything about a centimetre below that there are only normal nerves like you have on your finger.
Here's a trick I tell all girls when giving me head: OP stick up your middle finger. Stick it in your mouth and bite down on your middle kunckle. That's the furthest a penis needs to go in when giving a blow job, everything after that is a novelty (pointless) and has no effect on the physical sensation at all. Next time you give head, just sneakily put your middle finger beside his penis and measure as far from the tip down the shaft, the length of the tip of your finger to the middle knuckle.
You won't gag with it only that far in and you won't choke either.
Now you could have gagged because he thrust his hips. If he's a thruster then wrap your hand around the shaft and only leave the middle knuckle depth part exposed, that way you have full control over the depth it goes in.
As for what he thinks of you gagging, don't worry about it, you were giving him a blow job and he will want more.

 Don't try and deep throat ( take all of him in your mouth) as soon as his penis hits your uvula it's not easy NOT to puke or gag.
Next time just focus on the head ad used your hand on the shaft.
It's a learning curve, don't beat yourself up.
