A female reader, Abella United States +, writes (30 April 2011):

Abella agony auntFirst you need to clean out everwhere in your room. Run all your clothing through the washing machine and hand wash the delicate things.

With all your clothes being washed the next stage is also remove all your bed sheets and bedding. Wash all the sheets on the long cycle too.

Bugs are tiny. They can lay eggs on your clothing. Dust mites feed on the skin you shed as you sleep. Those Dust mites are tiny. Other bugs eat them. And such bugs love breeding in bed linen.

A nice long wash in hot water does wonders. But all your bed sheets etc must be washed weekly and new bed sheets should be put on your bed. More so in summer.

Once the clothes and bed sheets are out of your room then check if your curtains can be washed. If not then gentle shake the curtains then gently vacuum them with the curtain tool.

Then tidy up and wipe down every surface with disinfectant.

Then you need to vacuum everywhere, especially under your bed and all of the floor. And vacuum the mattress thoroughly. It is quite frightening how many millions of dust mites can exist on the mattress surface.

Now you can make up the bed with new sheets and put all your clothing away.

But there is one more protection.

There are also spray can 'room bombs'. I know it sounds horrible, but they work by making any not yet hatched bug eggs, still anywhere in your room, infertile and unable to breed when they do hatch. This breaks the cycle.

Read the unstructions. But i had to use one after a new kitten was brought home as a 'give away.' It had a few fleas, not realised initially. Not pleasant. And warm weather makes them breed so quickly.

As i recall i had to close the windows. Release the tab to start the actions of the spray can. Then quickly leave the room and shut the door.

Then everyone had to leave, including all animals, and go outside for several hours. Nothing must disturb the air to give it the best chance to work. When you get back you just throw away the can. Never had another flea.

Bugs love dark undisturbed places that no one has touched for ages. Also never bring food into your bedroom. It may only be an escaped crumb to you. But it's a banquet to bugs and helps them feed their offspring. Allowing them to breed sooner. So breaking the cycle is essential.

Once you have broken the cycle then your weekly 'housekeeping' will be reduced to changing the bed, vaccuming the floor and occasionally sprucing up the surfaces from time time.

Hope this helps?

Smileypants agony auntWell, your parents need to get an exterminator in your house. If that's not going to happen soon, maybe use one of the raid bug bomb things? Where you set it off in your room and leave for a few hours. Just please be careful spraying bug spray everywhere in your room...it is poison after all :o)
