I have an anal sex question and can't find answers

A female Sri Lanka age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hi,

Okay this probably sounds stupid. But please give me some serious answers... I would appreciate it. Yesterday my husband and I had anal sex and he came inside.

Today, more than 24 hours later, we had anal and vaginal sex both. Can the sperm possibly be alive inside my rectum all this time and can it possibly be transferred to my vagina? I am really distressed about this and I think I should do something about it... I googled to find out whether sperm can live inside the colon/rectum but I couldn't find anything online.

Please don't laugh or mock... I am in all seriousness!

Ciar agony auntYou will NOT become pregnant as a result of anal sex.

Think about it, you don't menstruate and defecate out of either interchangeably. Two separate passages and the anus does not contain a uterus with eggs.

As Honeypie says, though, you are vulnerable nasty bacterial infections.

Andie's Thoughts agony auntPlease use condoms until you're ready to be parents. Not only that, but it causes infections to go from anal sex to vaginal sex. Never do anal sex before vaginal. Please see a doctor together to discuss this - especially if he won't use condoms, you can get medication to temporarily prevent pregnancy.

If he won't see a doctor with you, find a trusted female doctor for yourself because it's dangerous to not be educated on what can happen with your health and sex.

A female reader, Honeypie United States + , writes (17 October 2018):

Honeypie agony aunt1. You two should NEVER go from having ANAL to vaginal. That is a sure way for YOU to get a bacterial infection in your vagina which can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease where BV bacteria infect the uterus or fallopian tubes.

Something YOU DO not want. It also can leave you open for other STD's, IF he has any you don't or if he has other sexual partners who has any.

As for whether sperm can live in the rectum it's hard to say, the ph is generally around 7,5 in the rectum - which coincidentally is around the same ph as sperm. Where as the vagina has a much lower and more on the acid spectrum. YET, sperm can live for up to 72 hours inside the vagina. So... I would venture a guess that sperm can live inside the rectum too, it's moist enough for that. UNLESS, of course you defecate, as that would empty your rectum.

If you really worry about this, maybe you two should consider using condoms. That way you know EXACTLY where the sperm end up (in the condom and then trash).

However, with ALL that said... I think it's highly unlikely that you can get pregnant this way.

Still in the future use condoms, better safe than sorry.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (17 October 2018):

Stop panicking. Sperm cannot live in the rectum for more than a few minutes and it's the same for outside the body.

What could happen though is a quick transfer between the rectum after coming inside you then going into the vagina. There is always a risk that way. Also your husband should not be going into your rectum then your vagina without washing himself first as this could cause a nasty thrush infection.

Using a condom is important if you do not want to get pregnant.
