As CD has mentioned, the small age gap between people when they're younger is more noticable than when people are older. There is a lot of things happening at that age, where the basic foundations of a person are being sought out and organized. It isn't until after their teenage years that mentalities are more refined. Mind you, this is a general statement and doesn't apply to everyone.

Plus there are other factors - external influences for a 15/16 year old dating a 12 year old. Often, teenagers are afraid of how that looks with their peers. It's very complicated in a not-complicated way when you're going through teenage life.

cd206 agony auntYou know what chick? The reason age gaps matter so much at your age is becase you both want different things out of the relationship. Give it some time. He's your cousin which means he'll always be close by and by the time you're 17 and he's 20 the age gap won't matter anymore.

Horsegirl agony auntIt's strange how age gaps matter so much when you're young but when you get older They don't matter so much. Like, as cd said, my cousin (three years older than me) probably thinks i'm just a kid, but both of my pairs of grandparents are 7 and a half years appart.

A female reader, cd206 United Kingdom +, writes (4 February 2007):

cd206 agony auntIt's not illegal to date your cousin and it's not illegal to date someone three years older than you but at your age three years is a big age gap. He probably sees you as a child. Also imagine breaking up with him which would probably happen because at your age relationships rarely last forever. You'd have to keep seeing him at family gatherings and it'd be very difficult for you. Just keep these things in mind before you come to a decision.
