A male United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hey, it's me again. This is a Long Distance Relationship Question. Just to give a little background information, I live in the US and she lives in Canada (579 mile[932 km] separation). We are both 16 years old. We met on a teen dating site 6 months ago and chat with each other every day.

My question today is how do I go about telling my parents about this whole LDR thing. My dad is over protective, but he can be reasonable at times, but this is different this is about meeting someone in person from the internet.

We both love each other. We chat almost every night, dream about each other. We've been together for 6 months, but we haven't really 'met' in person yet. We plan on meeting each other on her trip next year. The problem is getting my parents to agree. They really don't know who she is. My mom knows her first name and that she's in canada for a foreign exchange student program(I lied because I wasn't ready to tell).

I just want to know how do I tell my mom, or my dad about her. Like how do I convince them not to make me stop talking to her.

Please respond. I really want my parents to be okay with this before I make a huge mistake and lose their trust.

Question Form: How would I go about telling my parents about my Long Distance Relationship? If they disagree how could I convince them that I like her and she likes me?

I her and I to be together, even if it's only for a few moments. Something is better than nothing...

Thanks!

Dating someone online is the most worthless effort for teens. Remember you are only a TEEN,you have so much to do rather than by imagining how to meet him or her in distance. There are many many of them around you everyday that you might like. Explore your world with your friends, and classmates that you can see, talk, everyday. Not the one from distance. Studies show that long distance relationship never last long, it only creates havoc in your live and heart, because you will never find out what other side if he or she is cheating on you(he or she might promise you that you are the only one he or she loves, but who knows). So try someone realistic, date someone you can see every day or week, talk to him or her in person rather by remote imagination. Trust me, I had experience.

Respect your parents, listen to their suggestions. They won't lead you the wrong way.

HereAreMyTwoCents agony auntOk, first of all if you want your parents to trust you, you need to stop lying to them first and foremost. The first thing you need to do asap is come clean about the fact that she is FROM Canada, not just temporarily IN Canada. (Also, the fact that you are a boy might make it easier for your parents to go along with this, than if you were a girl. Parents are more protective of their daughters than their sons in situations like this. So that's a plus for you.) Also, if your parents have any sense they will realize that if they completely "forbid" you to talk to her you will find a way to do it anyway, so it is highly likely that you will be able to work out some sort of agreement or compromise with them to allow your relationship to exist and calm some of their fears. The best way to calm fears, though, is not by keeping or distorting information. That is the WORST way to calm fears. The best way to do it is to be completely open from day one about everything. Unless your parents are huge tyrants or something, (which from your post you are not portraying them as such, only a little overprotective) then work with your parents, and they will work with you. Also from your age bracket, you are either 16 or 17, so you are very close to being 18, so again... if your parents have any sense, they will not try to completely thwart your efforts to have this relationship. And if they completely oppose you, then you need to stand up to them and just tell them like Bon Jovi "It's my life!"
