I only did it just so he could go ahead and get it over with. How much does it cost to get the divorce papers. He doesnt want to get a lawyer because it cost to much he says. Can he just get the, divorce papers and finalize without having to go through all that and how much would it cost?

In an updated response to my question he does have kids, in 2006 they went to court bc she filed for allimony but she lost that case and he already pays child support. But i really doubt that she gets anything bc the most important things are in my name and all of his money is in my checking account so all i can say is good luck with that! But i will talk to him about just getting the papers. Thanks for all the helpful advice everyone.

anywhere from a few hundred dollar to millions... but let's assume that Mr. wonderful is not worth more than a few thousand- so he should be in the low end of the range. If his soon to be ex, is willing to sign the papers and not drag him through a year or two of hell, then you're talking about something in the $200 to $500 range. You want to make sure that it's done right, and that 35 years from now she doesn't show up looking for her % of his retirement savings that has grown to something sizable, and since she contributed in the first years, she gets more than you...

The bigger problem I have is why wont this "man", man-up and do the right thing? There's a bigger issue here, and it's not about the money... Ask him why you're not worth $200?

A male reader, Sandman United States +, writes (26 November 2009):

Sandman agony auntIt really all depends...

If there are children, the cost of divorce is really high since lawyers are needed in most cases involving children. If there is joint assets such as a house or multiple cars, a lawyer might be deemed necessary.

However, he can still file for divorce and not pay that much money. It depends on your state, but you will pay a "filing fee" to actually file the paperwork in the court. After that, because they aren't using an attorney, they may be forced to go to mediation where they hash out all the particulars (who gets what and who is paying for what bills, etc). Mediation in the state of Georgia is $100 per session - with a maximum of two sessions. You may only need one session or you may need two. If you cannot agree to the terms of divorce through mediation then they will need to go before a judge and IF that happens, an attorney should at least be consulted.

If both parties agree to the terms of divorce and there are no heavy items like children to consider, then it should cost him well below $500 to get his divorce finalized.

Hope this helps.
