How do you try to get along with someone you hate?

Question - (21 January 2011) 2 Answers - (Newest, 21 January 2011)
A female Canada age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I really hate my sisters boyfriend. He's loud, obnoxious, thinks he's hilarious, and is a HUGE suck up to my parents and other sister. Ever since the beginning he has ignored my presence and greeted everyone in the room except me. We spend our summers at the cottage and he complains the whole time, making every weekend unenjoyable. He uses her best friend as the punch line to most of his jokes and actually made fun of her for a whole weekend and the drive home for not having a boyfriend.

He knows I am not a fan of him because I tend to avoid him around the house and don't really talk to him and don't fake laugh at his jokes like everyone else. He will often make me feel uncomfortable by yelling part of a song into my ear randomly, blocking my path if we pass in the hall or the stairs, and once forced me into an ingenuin and awkward hug...let me go and turned to my sister and made a joke about it.

She is a really smart girl but he's really dumb guy and I really want

him gone but I know there's nothing I can do about it. My parents want me to try and be friends with him but I have so much hate for him I don't care to talk to him or be in the same room as him. I'm not very good at faking that I like someone because it often comes of sarcastic and insincere (which it usually is lol) and that would only make things worse.

I've tried being neutral by just staying out of it and avoiding any

contact with him but people aren't happy with it and I can't pretend

to enjoy his presence....what should I do?!?!?!

A reader, anonymous, writes (21 January 2011):

You should tell your sister how you feel about this guy and it might not make a difference but then again it might.

Or maybe you should pull him aside and have a polite word with him yourself.
