How do I deal with this ex who won't let go?

Question - (2 April 2010) 5 Answers - (Newest, 4 April 2010)
A male United States age 36-40, *arm writes:

My ex girlfriend has called once or twice a week for the past 2 months (I caught her cheating, again, with the same guy), but I never returned her calls. She Emailed me a few times, even invited me on a week-long trip to LA (2 weeks ago), and I haven’t responded. I let her borrow a dog crate before we broke up, and her mom let me borrow a tape recorder. My ex called and left a message about exchanging these items, so I called her back.

When we met up I tried to make it quick: “is that all of it? Alright, later”—and out the door. She acted like there was somewhere she needed to be anyway. Then, as I was leaving, she said “I missed you,” and grabbed my side. I told her not to touch me. She wanted to know why we couldn’t be friends. I told her I had been happier without her and didn’t want her in my life anymore. Told her she was selfish and untrustworthy—two qualities I don’t tolerate in my friends. She tried to rationalize her actions by saying, “I was unhappy with our relationship, so I got out, and you just don’t understand that, do you?” which doesn’t seem to be how I remember ot happenning. . . At any rate, she wouldn’t let me close my car door to leave, so I just drove off anyway. The last thing I heard was her calling me a really bad name? What's up with that? Who can explain it? Why can't she just let this be a clean break? What should I do now?

Garm is verified as being by the original poster of the question

The relationship was great for 4 years. Then she got a new job, moved, got a cell phone, and started lying to me like I was her mom or something. F That.

We'd still be together otherwise.

I admire your sense of boundaries and sticking to your guns. this is why ur ex is probably going crazy. My ex is starting to realize that her affair, I said 'good luck' basically, is not the perpetual honeymoon she thought it would be. two months later, she is miserable, goes out of her way to tell me how happy she is, etc.. I feel like saying "if you're so dam happy u wouldn't be telling me." anyway, we have a long history and children. if it wasn't for the children, the connection would be totally cut off. it took me a while to get over her but now that i have my control back and self esteem, her power to hurt me has vanished. thought i'd share that with you.

You did the right thing and should be commended for wanting quality in your life.

Just make sure you never succumb to the temptation to get back with her under any circumstances.

The Realist agony auntIt seems like she is between wanting to be with you and pissed off that you broke up with her. I know you probably do not want to be mean which is what would end up happening if you tried to actually talk to her. As long as each of you has all their own belongings I would not repond to anything she sends you or any of her calls no matter what. This way although it will be hard on her she will eventually realize that she can heal if she stops trying to get you back as well you can get on with your life.

I don't know why it always seems like one person in the relationship always goes a little crazy at the break up but they do get over it. I've been and the end with the crazy ex who eventually did get over me but it took months.

So yeah cut all contact and hope for the best.

Good luck.

Just cut all contact. Never ever get back to her again. You have nothing left of hers that she can have a hold over you with, so block her entirely from your life. Cut her email, phone calls, everything you can. Just cut her out and never speak to her again.
