How can one tell if they're bi-polar?

A female United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

How can you tell if you may have Bipolar? I am not quite sure if i should be asking for your help as i am no 100% sure i have symptoms or not. I don't really know where to start either.

Neither of my parents have been diagnosed with the illness but i have become worried that i may/may not have the illness because of my actions and thoughts over the last year or so. I have always hated myself but lately things have got worse. When i met my boyfriend actually. I have always had doubts that i am good enough etc but now i find myself trying to break up the relationship even though i love him to bits. I have had thoughts of suicide and have even gone as far as writing a note to leave my boyfriend saying goodbye. Needless to say i didn't go through with it. I have been diagnosed with depression in January i think and i was put on antidepressents. I found that they did not help and it affected my sex life with my boyfriend. At the time i was diagnosed my boyfriends dad had just died and he did not believe me when i told him what the doctor said (his dad was wrongly diagnosed apparently and my boyfriend believes depression does not exist therefore i was making it up).

As for the ups i do have good days where can smile and be happy with me and my life. I can laugh and joke and have fun. But the ups are not major happiness/recklessness and usually these ups only last a day or two then i find myself down again and trying to get my boyfriend to dump me.

Now i know i sound melodramatic (my boyfriends words) but i need to talk to someone. I know my boyfriend doesn't believe in these things so i have no-one to speak to in person. I don't want him to think i am trying to get attention etc and i also don't want to waste the time of a professional (and i would have to go alone again which scares the hell out of me). How would i go about understanding if i do truly have the illness or i am just depressed/making it up?

Sorry if this is confusing, i am very confused at the moment.

Thank you for reading.

Given your age it is likely that you are just being hormonal and overreacting to things because of that( it's totally normal and a pain but we've all gone through mood swings during this period). Mania is usually characterized by exaggerated happy or energetic periods often exhibited artistically and the depressive moments are extreme dark, often suicidal periods. It has been linked to substance or alcohol abuse neither of which you mention here. Is it possible that you may have SAD( seasonal affective dissorder). Make sure you get out as much as you can during the day, keep yourself active mentally and physically and just make sure your diet is healthy and consists of whole fresh food so you can ensure that you aren't deficient in any nutrients. Essential fatty acids have been shown to positively affect mood( you can get them from cold water fish, avocados, olives, flax or olive oil)

A male reader, CaringGuy United Kingdom +, writes (14 November 2009):

You are certainly depressed, but bipolar usually consists of what are known as manic epsidoes, that include you being very happy then extremely depressed and there is usually history in the family. I think it's more likely from what you have said that you have clinical depression. But I'm not a doctor, so don't take my word. If you want to talk to someone, then speak to your doctor, who should be able to put you in touch with a therapist who can help you talk through how you're feeling and why you're feeling that way. All the best.
