A female reader, Aunt Letty United Kingdom +, writes (31 May 2008):

If you e-mail him, keep it light. Send funny stories or anecdotes about crazy neighbours, don't talk about your feelings for each other and don't be too interested in what he's doing. You never forget your first Love. The chances of him coming back to you are slim. But by using the time apart to get your head and heart sorted, to make friends, find someone else to be the first person you want to share news with, and find laughter again; by the time he sees you again, and realises that you're fine and strong without him, he'll regret the day he ever felt the need for space. You are young and you have a lot of Love to give,...don't waste it on a guy who's willing to let you go.
