Some days he's sort of around me and my friends and seems interested but other days he just completely ignores me and doesn't seem to notice me at all. I talk to him sometimes but im quite shy around boys so the conversation ends fairly quickly. Do you think that puts him off? It won't put him off that you're shy, but it will confuse him. I think you have to be brave and tell him you like him. There really is no other way to get close to him. Be brave, start a conversation and ask him about himself, and see where it leads.
