Hopefully this will be appropriate for the site.Anyways, in the past week I seem to be having trouble sleeping. 3 nights ago I was awake for almost 36 hours which isn't normal for me, the nest night I fell asleep watching a DVD which is normal (plus the sleep had obviously caught up) and last night (26/3) I went to sleep around 12 midnight and then woke at around 2 feeling like every bone in my body needed to crack and then at 7am.In recent days I've been incredibly busy ad been sat at the laptop for sometimes up to 7 hours typing up important letters (specs and CVs) which has in turn, knackered me out but still I'm having trouble sleeping.Could it be that because I've not taken a rest for 3 days that my brain is still trying to work and I've suddenly stopped it? (I hope that was understandable)I'm a healthy eater and generally a healthy person who does a lot of walking, biking and by playing guitar, my wrists and fingers are exercised. So I'm just wondering, is there anything I can add to my diet that will help me sleep? Thanks :)P.s. For the next few days I'm going to be taking a rest from the computer to get 'clean' again so possibly, that could help? Reply to this Question |

Peterk5699 is verified as being by the original poster of the question Thanks for the answers. (I know I said I was giving this thing a break =/ but I've only been on it for half an hour tonight.
My mum told me that it's likely my brain HAS gone into overdrive and needs a rest.
I slept well last night after ptting on my thunderstorm CD (If anyone does have slight sleeping problems, I would reccommend this cd as it's amazingly relaxing)
If I do continue having sleeping problems I'll take your medication advice (as a last resort though)
Thanks again :)

I'm an insomniac and have these periods where I only sleep about 3-4 hrs a night for months so I take clonazepam & that is prescribed but when I run out and can't get to the doctor, I take Benadryl which is over the counter and it's not stored in your kidneys or liver like other over the counter sleep medication. It's very safe to take on a nightly basis (2 tablets) and takes about an hour to kick in and you start winding down. I've taken almost every kind of prescription medication out there for insomnia and these 2 are the ones I like best. Herbal remedies like Melatonin are hit and miss for me but sometimes work for other people. I've had horrible results from the type of sleep medication like Tylenol PM and Robitussen and prescription ambien- the ones that are supposed to just knock you out, I end up awake after about 3hrs on these.
Another thing I've always had to do is have a sleep regimine where in my bedroom, nothing is in there like a TV or even radio or computer. This is because you have to train your brain when you get in to bed, it's only to go to sleep. I also find a white noise simulator(this absorbs any distracting noises) on my nightstand works and I have dark velvet curtains that cover my windows so no light gets in. People call my room "the bat cave".
If you drink coffee or tea, I would just drink that in the morning. You probably don't have to do this all, but if it continues, I would suggest the above.

Hey Peter, i'm the resident insomniac of the board, nice to 'meet' you : o)
I don't think i'm the right person to answer your question here, i've tried every trick in the book, and none of them work for me.
In your case, it sounds to me as if you've lost your sleep pattern, and your brain 'IS' still working overtime.
Like you said in your postscript, you're taking a rest from the computer for a few days, and I believe that will definitely help. Oh...and a night hot soak in the bath before you go to bed should help too.
Other than that, i'm going to be totally useless in helping you. Sorry.
ps. Let me know if it works for you, maybe i'll follow your advice.
Sweet dreams hon.
