A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Ive been on the pill of the Microgyn 30 (not sure how you spell it) for 2 packets now. However on both withdrawal bleeds on the placebo break, my 'period' has stopped and then came back after a day. Last night, i was ill and whilst being sick i came back on my period, except it was heavier than its ever been, it leaked through my clothing and onto the floor within minutes of starting. Surely this cant be normal for the pill? I am sexually active, but i have used back up contraceptive (condoms) which havent broke, so i doubt i am pregnant. I am going to the doctors on Monday, but i was wondering if anyone had any idea whats going on?

Unusual bleeding is a common side effect of Microgynon. If you're still bleeding heavily, it would be worth ringing your GP surgery again tomorrow and asking if there have been any cancellations - if not, you could see if any nurses have a free appointment as they are good at dealing with contraceptive problems, and can speak to a GP there and then if they have any further worries. If you are still bleeding very haavily, you should explain to the receptionist answering the phone that you think it's an emergency, and again, you would be likely to be seen more quickly than Monday.

If there is a local Family Planning Clinic or an NHS Walk In Centre, you may be able to be seen there more quickly about this problem - try ringing them to see. There are other contraceptive pills and it may be that you need one with a different balance of hormones.

Do you take any other medications that make people prone to bleeding? (like regular aspirin, or warfarin)? Are you bleeding anywhere else? If so, this should be dealt with more urgently, either by getting an emergency GP appointment or by going to the local NHS Walk In Centre or Family Planning Clinic.

I had to try lots of types of pills before I eventually found one that suited me and didn't make me bleed heavily or frequently, so don't be too worried - hopefully, you will find one that suits you soon:) BTW, back up condoms are a very good idea - you sound like you have a mature attitude to contraception, which is great!

Katy. agony auntMaybe you havn't been given the correct pill for your body, or your body just might need to adjust. That deffinetley doesn't sound normal so the docs sounds like a good idea. I'd have a click around on the internet to find out more about what you're taking just to get some back up ideas 'til then.

Good luck.

A female reader, Quacked United Kingdom +, writes (29 July 2009):

Quacked agony auntMicrogynon30 (think thats how you spell it) upsets the hormones surrounding menstruation, so a side effect of the pill can be what is known as break through bleeding. Basically this is just heavy bleeding because your body is trying to adjust to the changes caused by the pill. Many women suffer random side effects like this so try not to worry too much. Just keep your appointment with the doctor to put your mind at rest.

Hope this helped...

Honeypie agony auntI can be that your body can not ( or have not) adjusted to the level of estrogen in the pill. I am glad you are going to see a doctor. Did you however ASK the nurse at the doctors office if you needed to discontinue the pill for now? Heavy bleeding like that is not healthy.

I would call and ask the nurse. Also you can google the pill and see for side effects ( or look at the package)

Usually they say if a women bleeds more then one full pad an hour to go to the ER. So really, don't linger if the heavy bleeding continue.
