A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

The weirdest thing ever just happened to me, and I’m really freaked out. I’m hoping this has happened to someone else out there before and they can give me an idea of what’s going on. It’s not a pretty subject, but bare with me.

I just started my period this evening, and when I was showering, and cleaning "down there" I felt something shockingly rough. Upon further inspection, I found a piece of god knows what hanging out. I pulled on it, and a HUGE piece of something came out. I'm 22 years old, and I've been having normal periods since I was 13, and I've never experienced anything like this, so I was quite freaked out. I sat there for a few minutes in shock trying to think of what it could possibly be. I know all about the uterine lining, and so I've seen little fleshy bits in my menstrual blood before, but this is definitely different.

It was a rectangular shape, I'd say about 1 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches. The surface looked really wrinkly, but it was totally solid to the touch, and kind of a rubbery texture, thicker in the middle. It looked like a fleshy sack. I know it's kind of gross, but I was really freaked out, so I investigated further. I cleaned it off, and split it open. The "sack" seemed pretty much like skin. Very thin and a pale peachy color like skin. But the weird part was inside the "sack" were crumbly black pieces. It kind of reminded me of damp dirt.

I immediately got online and started searching, but couldn't find anything that matched what I had just found. I found some stories that seemed similar, but not quite the same situation. Maybe because I really didn't know what I was looking for. I found a lot of people talking about blood clots, but no one really explained exactly what a menstrual blood clot is or would look like.

I wanted to call a doctor right away, but it's too late in the day. I asked my mom about it, and she said that blood clots can look black, but she was pretty baffled by the 'wrapped in something fleshy' part of it all.

Does anyone have ANY idea what the hell just happened??

It might also be useful to know that my period was totally on time, and it hasn't been any heavier/more painful than usual. And I my last gynecological check up was just a few weeks ago, and everything was normal. Definitely nothing to do with pregnancy

This very same thing happened to a previous g/f of mine. She refridgerated it 'til she could get to her nearest hospital. As it was a few years ago, the exact details are hazy but suffice to say, nothing was considered to be amiss. That was several years ago, no treatment was given, we're still in touch and she's been ok ever since. Nonetheless, do get it checked though.

Doctors and lab techs love this stuff. They would want you to submit it to a lab for testing.
