writes:I am just curious: do you think you can tell what a person is like by looking at their photo?I do a lot of online dating and sometimes contact a girl by their profile photo...but I am thinking this might be a silly approach, since often you really cannot tell what a person is like by their photo.What do you think? Is a picture worth a thousand words? Or can looks be deceiving? Reply to this Question

 Unless you work for the FBI or are some kind of advanced psychologist you are going to be hard pressed to decipher anything from a simple photo. You could learn alot from the context of the photos - like if your prospective online date is straddling an 8 foot beer bottle - that should tell you plenty as to her class.

 Yes and no. Anyone good with photoshop can make themselves into whoever they want. I do this as a job, and it's extremely easy to make someone look friendlier or sweeter or anything just with minor changes. So in that aspect, no not really.
But on the other hand, you can judge a bit by what kind of photo they choose to post. If someone chooses to post a smiling "happy" photo that's generally a sign of someone who wants to be perceived as friendly. Whereas if someone posts a picture of themselves pouting at the camera in revealing clothes, she's more likely to be very concerned with her appearance/perhaps less sweet/friendly. Though you can never be totally sure, so you shouldn't ignore someone who sounds nice in their description because of a weird photo.

 What you can learn from a persons photo is how good their cosmetologist is, and how good their photographer is. Or how good they are a swiping photos.
While a picture may be worth a thousand words. Now days a picture can lie as easily as the words.
On the other hand what else is there to use to choose by?
