Crush found out I liked him and asked why I never told him?

So my crush of 3 years finally found out i like him. Not by me though he found out by someone else. He asked me why i never told him. I told him my fears. But i really dont understand why he would ask me if we are going to continue being friends. Like it would really makes no difference if i had told him or no. I am really scared thought we were best friends but i feel it might be awkard. What can i do to not make things different or awkard between us?
