A female reader, anonymous, writes (10 June 2009):

First of all, take a look at this http://www.sextoyspy.com/ShowSexOracleArticle.aspx?ID=17. It explains the vagina and all the parts.

The hymen is a membrane of skin inside the vagina, and despite popular belief it is hardly ever intact. Most hymens, even if the female is a virgin, have holes in them. How else would the menstrual blood come out? Also, hymens can develop bigger holes from horse riding, tampon use, and certain forms of exercise so they are not a good indicator of 'virginity'.

Many women do bleed a little bit the first time they have sex, because what they have of a hymen is further broken by penetration. But as I said above, they might not have much of a hymen so the bleeding won't be noticeable or present. It doesn't mean they were not virgins.

I recommend you educate yourself about female genitalia before you have sex, especially the clitoris. It is the most sensitive part of a woman's sexual organs - it is more sensitive than a penis.

A female reader, k_c100 United Kingdom +, writes (28 May 2009):

k_c100 agony auntIcelordess has pretty much said everything that needs to be said on the subject! The hymen is not related to menstruation. Menstruation is the female cycle where 1 egg is released each month and travels down the fallopian tubes and into the womb. This is when the egg is supposed to be fertilised and create a baby. If this doesnt happen i.e. the egg does not get fertilised by the sperm then the womb lining will be shed, taking the egg with it and this is a woman's period. That is a basic version of the menstural cycle.

The hymen is just a piece of membrane (very thin skin) covering the entrance to the vagina. So technically if a woman has never had sex then this should be intact until the penis breaks it when it enters the vagina. However the hymen is easily broken and this can happen accidentally, without the woman even knowing! Such things as tampons will break it and also some forms of exercise such as gymnastics and horse-riding can break the hymen.

The hymen breaking is normally where the blood comes from when a woman has sex for the first time, so if she has no hymen she is unlikely to bleed. However as I have said above, it can break accidentally so a woman can still be a virgin yet have no hymen.

I hope this helps!
