Caught up in the moment, no protection..forgotten pill!

Question - (27 June 2009) 2 Answers - (Newest, 1 July 2009)
A female New Zealand age 30-35, anonymous writes:

My boyfriend and I have been together about a year (he is 17, I'm 16) and we are usually very careful about condoms when we have sex because although I am on the pill I am not the greatest at remembering to take it everyday. But about a week ago we got quite wrapped up in the moment and it just kind of happened and the was no condom used. He came inside of me, and it wasn't until a few days after that I realised 2 days before we had sex I had forgot my pill. I had taken the missed pill the day after but I read my instruction leaflet and it said I would not have been protected for 7 days, which I also remember my doctor saying when I went to get it. I have still been taking my pill since the incident and have just started taking the non-hormonal pills today so I should be getting my period in the next couple of days.

What I would like to know is, can I still get pregnant? If so, how long before I should take a pregnancy test? My friend and I are also going in sometime this week to get an STI check (we've both been with our boyfriends for at least a year but we still get checked every few months :P) and would they pick up on a pregnancy through this or should I just get a pregnancy test?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Can you still get pregnant? Yes. It takes awhile, sometimes weeks, for your body to register the hormones in the birth control pills and them to be therefore effective. If you do not get your period, take a pregnancy test, and be on the lookout for signs in your body that would indicate pregnancy (though don't be paranoid about it because when you first start the Pill you can experience pregnancy-like symptoms such as nausea and sore breasts). When you're getting your STI check, you can ask about a pregnancy test. If you go to a sexual health clinic, chances are they'll be able to help you out with that.

You would be wise to take taking the Pill seriously. I have been taking birth control since I was 16 as well. Take your pills at the same time of day EVERY DAY. Everybody has "caught in the moment" times, but you sound like a smart girl who knows how to take care of herself. Pills are not hard to remember to take. Leave yourself a post-it note, set an alarm on your cell phone. Good luck!
