A female reader, Susan Strict United Kingdom +, writes (29 April 2008):

Susan Strict agony auntIt is remotely possible that yeast infections (like Candida - Thrush) could be made worse if there is a lot of fluid that is allowed to remain and stagnate. I don't know of any case of lack of sex causing it and I've done some research and can't find it mentioned anywhere. I suppose that regularly ensuring everything is cleaned out and ventilated (see below) would greatly reduce the risk of a yeast infection, but there are simpler ways to do it than having sex!!

The prevention of yeast infections is usually to ensure plenty of ventilation to the area - i.e. don't put on layers of thick underwear and, in particular avoid this ridiculous habit that so many women have of wearing knickers, tights (pantyhose) on top, and then another pair of knickers to hold up the tights! Forget the underwear altogether would be my suggestion (yes I know, it would be most men's suggestion too, but for completely different reasons!!).

Sex is likely to increase the risk of infection, not decrease it, particularly of bacterial infections that are not necessarily sexually transmitted. ANY infection down there needs medical advice and attention, whether it's something as simple to cure as Thrush or something more complicated.

She got an infection from not having enough sex is basically what she's saying? I'm not a doctor but my guess is that this is very very not true...
