BettyBoup agony auntHi!

I'm currently in a relationship with a 39 year old man and I am 22. For me this is not a problem or an issue. I mean, yes we are in different stages in our life, and he has more life experience than I do. But I don't think it's an issue, it makes him the person he is, that I adore. What matters is how you make each other feel, how he treats you and how good a relationship you have. I don't personally think your age gap is too far. But you have to be comfortable with it.

If you click and both want to be together, what does it matter? You're both adults. If you find someone who's right for you, who feels the same way back and who treats you right, I don't personally think race, religion, age(within reason, ie the law), sex, or anything matters, if it doesn't matter to you both as a couple.

I personally have never had a better relationship, I am so grateful that I've met him. So if you really like him, go for it! He could be the love of your life. If not, at least you'll know.

A male reader, GD Greece +, writes (27 September 2008):

I am 39 and am presently dating a young lady who is 21.

I understand our age difference as does she, but we enjoy being together and have fun.

I don't if it will last, but that doesn't matter to me because I have seen friends get married under the best circumstances only to get divorced.

If you like this man, go for it! If it doesn't work out,you move on.

You should be thinking about how attracted you are to this man, how he treats you,and if you can see yourself having a family with him.

After all, your age difference is only 14 years. Certainly significant, but not overly so.

Finally, never take the advice of other people when your convictions are strong. You know better than us how you feel about him and how he feels about you.

That is what matters.

I say go ahead and enjoy the relationship.

A female reader, Renata1967 United States +, writes (27 September 2008):

Yes!! You are too young for this man!! You are going to change and grow so much more over the years sweetie!!I can tell you that at my current age of 41, I am pretty much an entirely different woman than I was at 23!!

Think of it like this: are you the same person now, as you were at 13?? 17?? I'll bet not!! And you will pretty much keep changing a great deal up until you're about his age. Not that changing stops at his age, but I think I can safely say that most of your growing and changing happens up until then. Give yourself the time and the freedom to just be 23.

If you really have your heart into to this man right now, FINE - but don't move in with him, marry him, or make babies with him for AT LEAST ANOTHER FIVE YEARS!!

This is an important time in your life - to discover who you will develope into; who you will FULLY become someday. Be young!! Have fun!!

You don't want to have to postpone these years of your life because you settled down too soon!! Both of you are at very different life stages, and that is a fact that will NEVER CHANGE between you both. Realistically, you can't jump into his stage, and he can't jump into to yours and truly be happy there for long.

How much has HIS life changed since he was 23?? I would only hope it has been a lot, or that may be another thing for you to question!!

Whatever you choose, do this one with your head....

Avoid using the word snafu and you should be fine.

You're not exactly 13.

Get on with it!

Good Luck!! xx
