Are his feelings repressed, or is he just moving on and being friendly?

A female Canada age 41-50, anonymous writes:

My boyfriend and I have been together for a year, and I broke up with him 10 days after our one year anniversary. I broke up with him to give him space. We are currently in high school and he has to do another year because he did not do well in his studies this year. He was not growing distant from me but I knew he needed the space more than i could understand. After I basically broke up with him. I drunk texted him, called him consistently and bothered everyone in his life for advice, he started growing distant because it was weird for him I suppose, but whenever he sees me now he smiles at me. I have stopped texting him and basically speaking to him. So I smile when I see him and just keep moving on with my life. I am just curious as to why he is smiling at me. His friend told me he would like space for at least 2 months at least till the start of next year, and we might possibly get back together. But I question everything and he acts fine around everyone as far as I am aware. I believe he is repressing his feelings but why does he continue to smile at me when he sees me?
