Hi is anyone here from South Africa?

Just have a question. I met someone online I have went to see him 3 times and he wants to visit me. He said he got his passport, his NIN, and needs his covid vaccine and says it is 300.00 usd. Seems a little far fetched to me. He's asking for my help to pay.

Thoughts?

A female reader, anonymous, writes (19 December 2022):

Why would you want to make a relationship with someone who has to rely on you for money? The only reason he wants you is for money? Get a man who has his own money and can pay his own way in life and do what a real man does and take care of you. That is what a real man does, he pays the bills, he does not ask the woman to do that. Tell him to get a proper job and income and then come back to you and in the meantime find a man who has honour and nobility to pay his way and not try to take advantage of women instead. If he is too lazy to get proper job or terrible with money then you are better off without him anyway. Or do you only date charity cases?

kenny agony auntHere at DC we see posts similar to this one time and time again where someone is another country is asking for money. Some of these people are writing in having already parted with vast amounts of money only to realise that they have been scammed.

Don't let this be you. This is a con, a scam for sure. You will part with a substantial amount of money and either never hear from him again, or he will be back with another elaborate story of maybe someone not very well in hospital and can you help with the costs.

I advise don't part with any money and block him.

As far as I know , Covid vaccine is free for all South Africa legal residents ( the sums quoted by Honeypie are correct but apply to US citizens who need to get vaccinated in South Africa ). For the insured people the vaccine is covered by their medical plan, and for the uninsured the government pays.

Anyway, - you are being scammed. No Covid vaccine even by private providers could cost 300 dollars, when the priority is to make it available to the largest number of people that's possible - such an extortionate cost would be enough to start a revolution anywhere ! ( considering that each dose of vaccine costs to the State who buys it between 2 and 5 USD...)

Come on! Some guy as far away as South Africa is asking you for money. How naive are you? You don't need anyone from that country to tell you that you're the victim of a scam. Commonsense should be adequate.

Honeypie agony aunt

Did he pay for you when you visited him? If not...

Why should YOU pay?

If he can not afford to pay for the requirements to travel then obviously he can't come to visit.

$300 for a covid vaccine sounds ridiculous - also

"Cost: Average cost for a COVID-19 PCR test is $50-60 USD (R850.00). Some private testing enterprises may charge up to $80-100 USD."

That is linked directly from https://za.usembassy.gov/covid-19-information/

Which is U.S. EMBASSY & CONSULATES IN SOUTH AFRICA

So sounds like a money grab or scam.

Sorry I wouldn't pay a dime.
