I'm a vegetarian and I have an alergy to anything with egg in, I have no idea what to eat because my choices are pretty slim, everyone i date thinks it's weird and that i'm just being awkward.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what meals I can have? Because it's starting to really get on top of me.

Carrot2000 agony auntI agree with the other poster's recommendation that you suggest Asian restaurants when you go out. I don't eat meat either and many have dishes made with tofu or just veggies. Indian restaurants are great because they tend to have a lot of really delicious vegetarian dishes.

HereAreMyTwoCents agony auntIf you live in an urban area there are a lot of things you could find to eat. You can find health food stores that have all kinds of vegetarian alternatives, and new foods you may not have heard of before. Ethnic markets, ethnic restaurants, you need to get out of your neighborhood and explore the markets. You can't expect to find good selection of alternatives to the mainstream offerings by only looking at your next-door supermarket.

HereAreMyTwoCents agony auntI swear to you if you look hard enough you will find something to eat. You need to clarify for us then:

Are you vegetarian or VEGAN? Vegetarian does not eat meat. Vegan does not consume ANY animal product including eggs, fish, dairy, honey, etc.

Where do you live, urban, rural, suburban? Are you near a metro area? What is the racial demographic of the area?

What are your favorite types of foods? Are there any foods that you absolutely abhor and wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole?

Give us more info, I am sure we could guide you in the right direction.

Guitarist agony auntRight, well, I've been looking around for something new, I've come home with nothing. Everything has meat in and EVERYTHING that doesn't have meat in has egg in. I can't win.

HereAreMyTwoCents agony auntAlso... a really helpful tip for you for when you are eating out is that Asian restaurants, more than any other kinds of restaurants, will have the most vegetarian offerings. Asian means Indian food, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Korean food etc. So, if you get into Asian foods you will likely find all kinds of foods you can eat that you can also take-out instead of having to cook yourself. Many restaurants have take-out options, you don't have to dine-in. My husband and I take out from all kinds of Asian restaurants all the time, not just typical Chinese restaurants. Also, if you like spicy foods, Asian food is perfect for you! But if you don't like it spicy they can also make it non-spicy for you, as well, on many of the dishes. Also, for protein (and since you're a guy your body will probably crave protein more than a girl's) you should look into tofu, tempeh (soy product meat alternatives), and into all kinds of beans, especially garbanzo beans aka chickpeas and the famous creamy dip made from these beans called hummus. It's all the rage in the middle east, has been for centuries! Get into avocados, they are an excellent source of healthy fats, and you can mash them up with guacamole mix into guacamole and dip them into chips. Get into alternative grains besides white rice there is also brown rice (much more protein that white rice), there is quinoa, couscous and many many others that you can put into your dinner instead of just white rice or mashed potatoes for your starch side. Go to the bookstore get a vegetarian cookbook, go to vegetarian recipe websites, there are tons of both books and websites with recipes. And again, if you're a young guy that's not really into cooking then the Asian restaurants are a really good bet for you for take-out. And ignore your meat and potatoes friends that call you weird or awkward, they're being very ignorant and narrowminded, indeed. Indeed, since there are many vegetarians in the world most of whom are much healthier than meat eaters. Again, the options for vegetarianism are very vast, start finding a favorite store or two in your area to shop at that caters more to a vegetarian need. A lot of times the ethnic stores, like Indian stores, and the health food stores will be of great help. And of course your local supermarket. I also believe that because you are a vegetarian you are in a position in which you will HAVE to make an effort to find the foods for you because our culture does not cater to vegetarianism to throw it in your face and make it easy for you to find. You see McDonald's hamburger ads on TV, right, not ads for hummus, right? I think that it would probably be helpful for you to go on YouTube and look up vegetarian cooking shows or cooking lessons, for long term success with this diet. This is to give you an idea of how to go about cooking the types of food you want to eat.

SirenaBlusera agony auntHave you talked to a doctor or dietician about this?

You should make an appointment with two or three, anything involving medical treatment... you should get a second opinion. I bet the other posters are right, there's a wide range of options.

A female reader, HereAreMyTwoCents United States +, writes (10 October 2009):

HereAreMyTwoCents agony auntActually, your choices are not slim at all but you will have to open up your palate to new and different foods. Do you know about tofu? Hummus? Guacamole? Pasta minus meat? Salads? Cereal with soymilk? Veggie pizza? Do you eat dairy products, or is that also omitted from your diet? Your choices of what to eat are actually the opposite of slim, they are actually quite vast. Also, remember that a "real meal" does not have to look like a traditional "meat and potatoes" dish to be healthy and filling.
