A female reader, Susan Strict United Kingdom +, writes (20 May 2008):

Susan Strict agony auntExercise? Up to a point. Don't overdo it. I did! Ouch. Also, when you slow down again, you put on weight very fast.

Getting plenty of sleep is good. When you go to bed, let your mind drift. Make up a fantasy (it doesn't have to be sexual!) and lose your thoughts in it. Something daft and totally unrealistic. Something to dream about. Like (and these are really daft, but they work for me) you just invented a device that fits to your car and lets you fly around the world at incredible speed.... or a machine that makes an immediate perfect copy of anything you put in it.. or you were just voted Queen of the entire world... or you are commanding an army fighting nasty aliens... or you travelled back in time... Your mind needs exercise as well as your body. More important, your subconscious needs exercise. Give it something to work on; something that's way outside your normal life. Reading books or writing stories is also an effective way of giving your mind the material it needs outside the limitations of your day-to-day life.

Food is good - and a variety of food is better. Obviously you don't want to put on a lot of weight, but I think it can be particularly depressing to always stick to "healthy eating". Sure, eat healthily. Just take occasional time out away from what is "good for you" and enjoy something you really like. For me, it would be a greasy bacon-and-fried egg sandwich or a chinese takeaway or a doner kebab without all the unpleasant healthy green stuff in it.

Focus on things you want to do, particularly things you enjoy doing and things that have a definite end result where you have achieved something however small. Growing things; painting & decorating; little building projects like making a little trellis halfway down the garden or building a brick barbecue; move the furniture that hasn't been moved for ten years and clean behind it! At work, maybe, sort out the drawers of your desk and file everything properly. Finishing jobs is important. That little burst of satisfaction at completing something goes a long way to reducing depression. It doesn't have to be anything big. It can be almost anything, as long as you can feel satisfied that you have done it. Then move on to your next little "project".

Will that do for a start?

Yep it's exercise all the way. After exercise you body pumps out ton's of happy chemicals. Exercise, enough sleep and eat well. That should do the trick. If it dosen't.... well imagine how great you'll look and how fit you'll be.

Aunt Audrey agony auntExersize is a great way to beat depression, you may feel like doing nothing but if you make the effort the after effect are well worth it.

I have taken St John's Wart, a natural remedy for depression, it works for me. There are lots of natural remedies that help such as essential oils, ask in your health store.

Good luck.

Exercise...if you can make yourself get out and DO something active each day, even just a 20 minute walk, it will help...it will get all those "good endorphoines" going and increase your energy. Trust me, you will feel great afterwards and will start to look forward to it!

Get more sleep...I bet you're not getting enough now right? Design a really relaxing "bedtime routine"...it may include things like a nice bath, a cup of warm milo, reading a chapter of some romance novel, some quiet music for example...anything that will signal your body that it is time to unwind...cue your mind to "turn off" etc. You shouldn't work or watch TV in your bed...it should be a "sleep and relaxation only zone".

Try some of the "super foods" too - almonds, tomatoes, oily fish...I can't tink of them all now sorry...google it!!

If you really want to be thoughrough have a blood test to check if you're defficient in anything...eg: low iron can make you pretty lethargic.

Good luck!
