Am I destined to be fat forever?

Question - (3 February 2009) 5 Answers - (Newest, 9 February 2009)
A female United States age 41-50, anonymous writes:

I need to, and I have decided I am going to try. I feel like a fat hog, and it's gotten to the point where I'm sick of looking in the mirror.

To tell the truth, I am so scared, though. I've read about, and been told, that there are some people that just CAN'T lose weight.

How do I know if I'm one of them? Is there any way to fix this problem, or am I destined to be fat forever?

Thanks, in advance.

k_c100 agony auntUnless you want to pay to go and get tested at a hospital where they will have to analyse your DNA (very expensive!) then you need to stop thinking like this!

Basically some people use "I cant lose weight because of my genes etc" as an excuse to eat more and do no excercise! The truth is, genes do play a part and so do many other factors, like if your mum put on lots of weight when she was pregnant with you then you are more likely to be overweight. There are many scientific reasons why you are overweight however one thing scientists have agreed on is that no matter if you have the so called fat gene, if you have whatever medical condition; if you eat healthy and exercise more you will lose weight!

I was in the same position as you; I honestly believed there was something wrong with me because I couldnt lose weight. I had every test under the sun, took loads of time off work and guess what? The results were all negative - I am perfectly healthy! So what dawned on me is that I am fat because I eat the wrong things and dont exercise enough!

You need to change your mentality towards your weight; start thinking "I can do this". Change your eating habits, exercise at least 3 times a week (this is the minimum - 4 or 5 is better). The recommendation is half an hour of exercise a day where you feel out of breath and get a little sweaty. So this adds up to 3 and a half hours a week; 4 sessions of around 50 minutes.

Say worst comes to worst and you dont lose anything (which I am highly doubtful of!); if you have changed your lifestyle then you will be healthy on the inside and that means you will live longer.

This all depends on what your current weight is and height - if you are larger (classified as obese or more) then losing weight should be easy at first and fairly rapid. Then you will hit a barrier where your weight starts staying the same - this is when you need to up the intensity of your excercise and eat even healthier.

If you only have a little to lose, like 30lbs-40lbs, then it will be harder as your body will be fairly happy at this weight. You have to accept that this will be hard and you will have to make sacrifices - no more food you love, no more takeaways, no more alcohol! Get serious about it and you will suceed.

If you need any weight loss tips or ideas for meals then feel free to message me!

Good luck!

A female reader, Emilysanswers United Kingdom +, writes (3 February 2009):

The chances of you being one of the very very small number of people with some kind of glandular disease or genetic disorder that forces the body to put every calorie into fat are minute.

The chances of you just having a slightly stretched out stomach and your body being USED to being that size are pretty high.

The best advice I can give you is just to make small changes and make sure you are NEVER hungry. Rather than having crisps and snacks during the day, have fruit instead. Always have some kind of tasty healthy thing so that you can nibble.

Also, never stuff yourself till you are full. This stretches your stomach and means you have to eat more to feel full than normal people.

Do mild exercise, don't hit the gym hard or anything as your knees will be knackered. You can only start running and the high impact stuff once you get a bit of weight off through walking, dancing about, and eating healthily.

For someone who has decided to make a positive change you are very negative before you even start. Are you looking for an excuse just in case you find it hard?

Give yourself a slap and get on with it. Worrying only burns half the amount of calories that laughing does so get down to your local comedy night and think positively that when you get on the scales NEXT week, you are going to weigh less than you do now.

Good Luck!! xx

Calories in must be less than calories out.

It's as simple as that.

This means eating less or exercising more.

You can buy all the books you like all the dvd you like, it all boils down to the same thing.

You need will power and tenacity.

Good luck
