A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Alright. It's been about, what? 3 months? going onto 4? And I feel horrible and disgusting.

It started after my period in august. There was A LOT of discharge. I thought it was normal at first, because my period just ended. But for the rest of the month, it became a bit too much. I told my sister I think I might have an infection. And she seems to always have this attitude with me. . . I dunno what her problem is. but whatever. she said she would make an appointment. She never did. So it goes onto September. The Same feeling everyday. Extreme wetness and a horrible horrible oder. Even After I shower, that oder won't go away. Sometimes I don't feel like leaving out of the shower. I just feel so gross. I remind me sister again. Again the attitude. And she finally makes an appointment. But all the way in October. . . So I wait some more.

October comes. I realized I hadn't had my period for the whole month of September. I got a bit worried. When the day to see the doctor comes, my period comes. Great. I felt uncomfortable going to the doctors with my period. So I went to reschedule. They were about to reschedule me for a date all the way in December! I asked if they had any other dates closer from today's day (october 5th). They said the only Available day is the 11th of November. Great. More waiting. There is only one gynecologist in this whole area, So the person is always booked.

I don't even know what I have. I had a yeast infection before, but that was because my period was coming. But I didn't have THAT much discharge. and it itched and felt really uncomfortable.

Right now, it's like, The whole bottom of my panties are soaking wet and I have this horrible oder. And I feel VERY uncomfortable, because of how wet it gets. (god, talking about this is gross. . .)

Also when I went to the hospital in september, the doctor told me I had a urinary infection. And gave me one pill for it. she said she was gonna give me more, but when she shift was over, I left the hospital, and she forgot to leave the pills for me. so I still have that.

I really dunno what to do. I feel so gross. and I keep getting the feeling, I'm get my period again, near my doctors appointment, and I REALLY DO NOT wanna wait any longer to see this doctor. . . I don't even know how it is there. it's going to be my first time.

Hi. I'm really pleased you have been to the doctor's. That's the first step.

I'm also glad she ran some tests on you, which is the only way to find a true diagnosis.

No doubt if the test she has run on you this time comes back negative, she will undoubtedly run another whole series of tests. Each time she does this, it narrows it down until the exact problem is found. It will be very precise.

So until the problem is found, just stay patient and calm. Do not give up on it.

Every problem has a solution. We will get to the bottom of this - you can be absolutely sure of that.

You are now on the right track, and on your way to optimum health again.

blahblahblahh agony auntEveryone is bad at handling certain things don't worry, but you have to snap out of that and you have to nip this in the bud now, you may feel okay now but if you leave it much longer you will be in a lot of pain, speaking from experience. Get a swab taken, it does sound like bacterial vaginosis.

Hi. I have another question for you.

Why is it that your sister controls everything that you do?

Your health is your responsibility, not hers. Regardless of your age. Seeing doctors and specialists is also your responsibility. Let your sister look after her own health.

Who do you live with - is it your sister? Is she your legal guardian?

What about your parents, you don't mention anything about them?

Yes, like you said perhaps more internet research might shed some light on it.

Difficulty in urinating, could well be some kind of UTI - Urinary Tract Infection.

Perhaps there's a start for another internet search - "womens urinary tract infections". See what it brings up.

Good luck. Let me know how you go.

A female reader, Nime United States +, writes (26 October 2010):

Nime agony auntI just want to add if you can't get an appointment earlier than your Nov 11'th one, you can do the following until then: If you wake up one morning and it's raining heavily or even snowing, call up the GYN office and ask if there were any canceled appointments you can take. Many people flake out on their appointments when the weather is bad because they "just don't feel like going out." It's very likely you'll be able to get an appointment this way.

A female reader, Nime United States +, writes (26 October 2010):

Nime agony auntI am sorry for being harsh before, I know it's scary at first to start making your own appointments and dealing with strangers over the phone. But it gets very easy; you just pick up that phone, tell the person on the other end (politely) what you want, and even if you sound like a dope, they will be able to help you, because it's their job. I'll give you a little guide so you can start making doctors appointments on your own:

1. Know your health insurance plan. You mentioned your sister holds your health insurance card? Get it away from her.

2. If you already have a GYN (or want to try your GP), you're already set. If not, you can either call the phone number on the back of your insurance card or go to their website to search for local doctors "in network," meaning they take your health insurance. Select a doctor. Your options sound limited, however, because you said there is only one GYN in your area. Double check that fact online.

3. Call their office. You will likely reach a nurse working the front desk. Say, "Hi, I'm calling to make an appointment with Dr. X." They will ask if you're already a patient, you say yes or no, your name, etc. If it's no, make sure you ask them if they take your insurance. Next they will ask the reason for your appointment. Explain that it is an emergency (in your current case) and you need to see your doctor as soon as possible. Stress that you are experiencing yellowish-green discharge. Ask if there is any way they can schedule you an appointment extra early one morning this week, when the business first opens (if there is nothing else).

4. If they can't schedule you an appointment soon enough for you, ask them what they would advise you to do or where to go. You never know, they might have some good advice. Otherwise, I'd go to your family GP or the ER. When you do go to your appointment, bring along your insurance card and present it at the front desk. When you leave, remember to ask at the front desk if there is a copay under your insurance (like $10 or $15, usually) and pay it there.

Dorothy Dix is right, you could just go to your GP or the ER, however, I would only do this as a last resort, as those doctors do not specialize in gynecology and may offer only a general (possibly ineffective) treatment for a diagnosis they are unfamiliar with. My mother is a nurse and has told me, based on her experience on the job, to always go to the GYN for gynecological issues because going to the GP or ER will be hit or miss when it comes to resolving them.

Good luck with your issue and keep us updated! :)

@ Nime: Wow. Harsh with the 18-21 thing. I know I should be doing this stuff on my own now. But I dunno how. And when I try, my sister always is like, You are not ready, I'll do it. I tried to go put in own medicine, and the first thing she said was "I got it, just put it in my bag." and I was like, But I want to do it. and she got an attitude with me. I really want to start doing this stuff by myself, but the stuff I need, she won't give it to me. Like my other medical card. . .

And I'm sorry I didn't post that stuff you listed. I was also in a rush to get to school (night school.)

discharge: yellowish- with a little pinch of green? Gross.

other than the extreme discharge and horrible smell. . . that's it. No pain or anything. only thing is, when I have to pee, it take a while. like you can feel it about to come out, but then it just stops there. and it takes a while to come out. I thought it was weird too that i wasn't in any pain, cause I had one before when I had my first Yeast infection. and it hurt A LOT. so when my doctor told me, I was kinda confused.

@ Tisha-1: Gees. You guys are really harsh. . . i know I should have done something sooner, but i'm new to all this. I'm sorry I'm doing all of this too late and it's something I should have known by now. I will try to do that stuff, but I really don't wanna seem like some crazy person. I don't wanna demand for help just to be hung up on. It's my first time going to that kind of doctor, and my sister told me I should cancel because you shouldn't go when you have your period. it wasn't only because I felt embarrassed. I'm trying to find a job and stuff to push my self away from this and be more independent. I really am trying. it's hard when You keep getting pushed down, and told that you are not ready and you can't do that. And when I try to do something, she stops me and won't let me learn from mistakes or whatever.

@ Dorothy Dix: My sister doesn't think that it's even serious even though I had it for a while. I didn't even know you could get that kind of stuff to test it on yourself. I wish I was more aware of these kinds of things. That's new to me. also, I have looked stuff up, but when I saw the the major sypmtoms, they didn't apply to me. and most of all of them seem the same. maybe i need to do more research.

A female reader, Dorothy Dix Australia +, writes (26 October 2010):

Hi there. It's certainly persistent the discharge that you have.

Why hasn't your family doctor given you some anti-biotics to take and conducted some basic urine tests himself?

Most general practitioners, usually do as much as they can first before going onto referrals to gynocologists. There is a lot GP's can do first. It's not always necessary to go that far.

But perhaps, this has already happened.

Another option in the meantime, is there are many very good medical websites where you can ask lots of questions and have them answered, about very specific problems. I'm quite sure that you could even get some answers to your problem and have some helpful advice administered while you are there. It's a good place to start.

It's certainly worth considering very seriously. Because you have already done too much waiting and with very little happening. So you are still at square 1 - the beginning.

The internet, is a virtual encyclopaedia of knowledge about everything. There is basically nothing that you can't find information on.

Perhaps as your search enter:- "Womens gynocology problems". I'm sure you will find many very helpful websites where you can find some answers, which will make all the difference in your life.

At the moment, I really feel because of the wait you have for the gyno, you are running out of options.

Visiting the medical website, will get the ball rolling a whole lot sooner, so you can be on your way to good health again.

Don't cancel your gynocology appointment though, but in the meantime, it is really worth it to do this research on the internet to give you some understanding and possible treatments available.

A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (26 October 2010):

Tisha-1 agony auntGet on the phone with the doctor's office.

"I need to see a doctor sooner than my appointment. It isn't a life and death emergency but I have been soaking through pad after pad with discharge with a nasty odor and this has been continuous for four months. I have never been examined before by a gynecologist and I am fearful that this is a major infection."

You need to say some words that will be hot buttons. "Continuous odorous discharge." "Someone said it could be pelvic inflammatory disease." "Someone else said I might become infertile." "Negligence." "Kidney infection." "UTI out of control." "Possible sepsis."

YOU are your best health advocate. Not your sister, not your doctor, not anyone but YOURSELF. So YOU have to push and push and demand to be seen, or there may be a worry about negligent medical care.

I would say that you did yourself a great disservice by NOT going when you got your period. Yes, it's not great that you got your period, but YOU HAVE A MEDICAL ISSUE. YOU ARE THE ONE WHO HAS TO CHASE DOWN THE PEOPLE THAT CAN HELP. The medical system is swamped. You need to push yourself to the front of the line and do not apologize for that.

Call them tomorrow and get yourself seen ASAP, or ask if you need to go to the ER for an examination by a physician. YOU, YOU CALL, not your sister, not anyone else, YOU have to become upset and hysterical and freak out on them that you are worried about all those hot button words I gave you. FREAK OUT and GET SEEN.

Good luck.

A female reader, Nime United States +, writes (26 October 2010):

Nime agony auntOkay, I'm going to sound harsh here, but is your age really 18-21? If so, I don't know why you're still waiting for your sister to make your appointments for you; you are an adult and this is your health and therefore YOUR responsibility. You should not have canceled your appointment in October because of your period; that was immaturity. You should NEVER ignore a health problem because you're embarrassed; doctors have seen it ALL.

If you really still had a UTI I expect you would be in a lot of pain and it would have spread to your kidneys, so that has probably cleared up. If you suspect not, go to the emergency room. Like blahblahblahh said, it sounds like you have bacterial vaginosis, which can be cleared up with antibiotics. You don't report any itching or pain, the color or consistency of the discharge, whether there are sores, etc., so none of us can make a better guess than that.

A female reader, blahblahblahh United Kingdom +, writes (26 October 2010):

blahblahblahh agony auntOkay firstly get yourself to a doctor asap, I don't know how the health system works in the U.S, but it's shocking you have to wait that long. You need a course of antibiotics for the urine infection before it spreads to the kidneys. The bad smelling discharge sounds like a bacterial vaginosis infection which is also treated with antibiotics. It's common to get this infection after a uti.
