 He may have some resentment about the break up or maybe he is tense in his life right now. Who knows?
You have a right to express your opinion, and he has a right to dispute it, or state an alternate outlook. Perhaps he thinks that when you are giving your opinion, you are opening up a debate. We won't know what is going on in his head.
I recommend that you avoid stating your opinion in front of him for a while. You can avoid arguments when you do not open yourself up to them.
