Hi! I am wondering why women are so competitive about other women's weight loss/body transformations. I lost 20 lb.s and worked really hard in the gym and am on a very strict diet. Some women are complimentary but to others it seems like a competiton. PS--About me: I am low key and never mention my weight loss. I am just happy but hate the negativity from others. What is anyone else's experience re: this?

A male reader, anonymous, writes (20 February 2012):

Many overweight people like to tell themselves that their obesity is not within their control: bad thyroid, bad metabolism, and other factors that fall outside diet and exercise. Many will rationalize that drinking a diet coke with their fast food is progress and are baffled when they don't lose weight. Many will go to the gym for an hour but actually only do the equivalent to 10 min of exercise and then claim there is nothing they can do to lose weight.

You can then see where the resentment comes from. You've actually done the hard work and lifestyle changes to get where you are. They feel entitled to those results and find it horribly unfair it happened to you. As with most things you will be successful at, there will be your supporters and your hecklers.

I would say they are just looking at your success and using it to motivate themselves, partly from jealousy, partly from admiration because obviously you have achieved great success through all your hard work. People love talking about diets and fitness anyway, and what they are doing, what they are cutting out. Rise above it and do whats best for you
