Hi.

So, i'm almost certain i have a phobia of vomit and illnesses. I cannot stand anything remotely related to vomit, it scares me and i panic! I also freak out if anyone mentions or thinks that they are ill. I hate it, it is literally ruining my life and taking over. I've re-searched it and a lot of sites have said it's anxiety and i need to speak to someone. But who?

Please help me with any contacts or where to get help it would be much appreciated!

A reader, anonymous, writes (9 June 2012):

I had this emetaphobia, & it improved once I had children, at first if they were sick, I struggled but once I split with their dad I had to cope on my own! I still don't like it, but I can at least deal with it.

I didn't get morning sickness when pregnant either. Sometimes someone up there looks out for us I believe!

It's called Emetaphobia. It is actually quite common but unheard of. I have had Emetaphobia for years and years and it has gradually got better. It can be treated with CBT (Cognitice Behaverhil therepy) and sometimes medication to reduce anxiety. Often councelling helps too, to find out what caused it or to work through bad experiances in the past. I would look up as much as you can about this and then talk to your parents and GP but be prepared for people not to take you seriously. I suggest printing off some infomation about it for yourself and for your parents to better understand. This is a serious problem and can affect people greatly some not leaving the house or starving themselves so seek help and understand that this isn't 'silly' or 'immature'.

You can visit the International Emetophobia Society online and there is a forum. You will probably read what people put and think 'Omg thats me!'.

Good luck to you, I wish you all the best in the future.

aunt honesty agony auntOkay so the first thing you should do is go to your doctor and tell them how you have been feeling. They can forward you on to the appropriate help. I had a friend who had this phobia and there is a name on it. She used to panic as well and she was really bad. She was like that for years and she tried a lot of different things, but she went to a hypnotherapist and since then she has been doing really well.
