When is the best time us to break up?

Question - (2 October 2010) 1 Answers - (Newest, 2 October 2010)
A female United States age 41-50, anonymous writes:

I'm in a quandary. I've been going out with my girlfriend now for several years. Sometimes things are good, but a lot of the time I just want to end the relationship.

It's been so long I'm not sure I love her any more.

I just can't see a future together and know that at some point I'll have to end it. The trouble is that she still loves me and I know she doesn't feel the same way.

My question is: When do I split up with her? There is one other factor here...

We are currently traveling around the world and shall be for the next 5 months. Should I break it off now thousands of miles from home or wait until we get back? I'm tempted to wait, but aren't sure if it's me being weak and putting off the inevitable. Also, the closer to returning home we get, the more she talks of future plans and our life together and the worse I feel as I see no future.

Please help!!! Any thoughts would be truly appreciated.

Wow, you’re in a scary position my friend. My girl wants to travel the world with me too, so I don’t know what to say really.

If you did break it off during the travel, it will devastate her, and you can consider ANY TYPE of relationship with her in the future off for good. But if you sacrifice your time and brave it out, maybe that would be a better option for both of you.

I don’t know what kind of person you are, but I think it would be weak and selfish if you did hurt her now, and I’m sure you’ve already thought about this yourself.

So be brave I say. You never know what could happen in 5 months.

Good luck to you :)
