Question - (8 November 2015) 2 Answers - (Newest, 12 November 2015)
A female United States age 30-35, *idsummer writes:

Hello,

I have an important question, my bf is renting an apartment where we can both live. He will move in before I do, because I'm going on vacation, so I will move after a month. They said they would add me to the lease when I would be moving in, but I am not working, since I am leaving for a month on vacation and am moving very far from where I am now. I will look for a job once we move in. What do I do, because I understand I have to be on the lease since I will be living there permanently, but I don't want to be reliable for the rent since I am not working at the moment. My bf is okay with this because he understands my situation. So my question is, what would I be on the lease as, if im not legally responsible for the rent?

Thanks

By adding you to the lease, the document will most likely be written so that you share financial responsibility to make payments and abide by all the other requirements of the lease. On the other hand, sometimes people are added to the lease without financial responsibility, just so that the landlord knows who is occupying the apartment. Read the least and find out which it is. A smart landlord will probably require you to share financial responsibility whether you have a job or not. You would probably require the same if you were in the landlord's shoes.

like I see it agony auntUnfortunately, the option you are looking for isn't an option. If your name is on the lease, you will be legally responsible for the rent should your boyfriend fail to pay it.

If you're not sure your boyfriend can be relied on to pay rent on his own in a timely manner, reverse the order in which you're doing things and be sure you have a job/income lined up *before* you move out with him.

Good luck and best wishes!
