person12345 agony auntThe side effects of the implant are the same as with any other hormonal contraceptive. Some people tolerate them very well, while others do not. I would experiment first with something a little less long-term like the pill or nuvaring to see how you do with hormonal methods in general. If you tend to tolerate them well (or find one you really like) you should stick with it or try the implant. For people who tolerate it badly, it means they have this fairly noticeable scar on their arm after a somewhat painful procedure and they are miserable. Some possible side-effects, weight changes, change in sex drive, severe mood swings or changes. Though my friends who tolerate hormones well and got the implanon like it a lot. However, more of my friends got Mirena the IUD and it seems to be MUCH better tolerated. Even though it's a hormonal method, supposedly the hormones stay localized. Everyone I know who's had Mirena loves it.

My girlfriend had it done when she was about 22. Her periods almost stopped for a few months and for about 3 months she had practically NO sex drive and was unable to get wet (she was completely dry) But after the three months, she seemed back to normal.
