What does he mean he's in his shell?

I started to feel for a guy friend after months of us hanging out and having him stay over, i admitted my feelings and got knocked back which hurt. After a few weeks things went the same, hanging out together and staying over. I told him again that i still had feelings,He stopped talking for over a month. Recently he mseged me tht he missed me n came to see me. We were just laughin wen he kissed me! We ended up sleeping together since he left he's been very quiet and told me he's just in his shell??
