What could be causing this vaginal odor?

A female United States age 36-40, *mALady writes:

Okay, I'm new here and hope that maybe this will help.

Within the last few months, I've started having almost a fishy smell coming from my vagina. It started out smelling like protein and was very faint. There wasn't any unusual discharge or anything like that but as the months have gone on, the odor has gotten stronger and more fishy smelling. Also, I'm having a thin, clear discharge so it's almost as if it's -always- wet down there.

I've been with my boyfriend for 2 1/2 years. We don't have sex much (for various reasons) and the last time was March 10th. It started shortly after. He is the only sexual partner I have had for the entire 2 1/2 years we have been together.

I do have an IUD (Mirena) so when we do have sex, it is without a condom. We both got tested when we decided to take it to the physical level and we both came back clean and I've never had an STD (neither has he).

I no longer have medical insurance so for the past year and a half I haven't been able to get a pap smear. On top of that, I definitely don't make the most money so it's hard for me to afford health care. I'm very clean, I shower every day and use the same kind of soap I've used for years.

What would cause these symptoms? What options to I have for getting diagnosed and treated? Thanks to everyone who takes the time to read and help!

Thanks guys. I got it figured out and it's been gone for a few days now. Turns out I HAD changed soaps without knowing. My boyfriend refilled my body wash bottle with antibacterial soap...

QuirkLady agony auntIt could be bacterial vaginosis; definitely go to a Planned Parenthood or other clinic and get yourself checked out. However, antibiotics have an iffy cure rate and they usually give you a yeast infection afterward. If the doctor diagnoses BV, look into buying a probiotic with Primadophilus Reuteri to balance the bacteria in your vagina instead.

It could be due to the coil. I had lots of problems with mine inc an infection that gave me a bad odour & odd discharge.

You really do need to get checked out.

hi there

you could have bacterial vaginosis, the symptoms are as you described, you doctor though can comfirm this better than i could on here, for the above you can either get antibiotics which will clear it up but there is a strong chance it will return, ive found a new product available in chemists, which is gel you insert them like you would a tampon 1 a day for the first week then one whenever you feel like you need them they are great and id def reccomend them,

that said please go to your doctor and say you have these symptoms, and ask could it be bv you have..

A reader, anonymous, writes (9 July 2009):

What you have sounds like BV [bacterial Vaginosis]. It is not sexually transmitted however it does need to be treated. You will need to contact your healthcare provider or doctor for a perscription.

If you dont treat it, it will keep reoccuring and will be especially noticable after sex.
