A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Recently I've noticed I've been getting dark hairs on my neck, chest (in between my boobs), around my nips and my bum and down the back of my legs. I shave the legs and bum hairs, but i pluck the other hairs on my body. I'm scared of what this may be, should i see my doctor? I can't wear shorts or a skirt out because after i shave the back of my legs and my bum i get a rash, and im pale so you can see the dark hairs and red rash, I've tried waxing too, doesn't really work. My other friends don't have it, neither does my mum or sister.. thanks.

A female reader, Read-the-signs United Kingdom +, writes (27 January 2012):

If you are too thin your body grows more hair as a defence mechanism. Or if you have polycystic ovary syndrome that can lead to more hair growth (but usually involves the face too). I say get your hormone levels checked by a doctor and then only remove the hairs that are causing most offence to you. Otherwise you will have embarked on a long time consuming process of trying to keep yourself hair free.

Don't pluck it does make the hair grow back darker and thicker. Waxing thins it out over time, but you must be careful and do it properly and exfoliate after or the day after waxing to ensure no ingrown hairs and infected boils.

So_Very_Confused agony auntagreed if this is new hair that a medical work up in in order to determine if it's hormonal.

If it's just the way it is... well most women have hair on the backs of their legs...

I have a full brazilian bikini wax and the last time I did it the woman flipped me over and did my bum all the way up at the top.... i grow hair there apparently.

backs of legs is normal.

hair on breasts around the nipples... normal that I tweeze it's just a few hairs...

i tweeze my lip chin and neck nearly daily for the dark course hair and have it waxed every 6-12 weeks for the finer lighter hairs I don't get.

some women have more hair than others... my arms are so light and sparse it's liek there is no hair there but I knew a woman once who you could braid the dark hair on her forearms.... it was very thick and long and dark...

A female reader, anonymous, writes (26 January 2012):

some people just naturally have more hair, but if this is a new developemnt, and if you are too old for puberty but too young for menopause, this is probably a sign of a hormone imbalance of some sort (maybe caklked polycistic ovaries or soemthing along those lines, but I'm not a doctor!). If you are overweight, there is a higher chance of this happening, I would go and see a doctor just to make sure everything is fine, and get some professional opinion. Make sure when you shave you use a fresh, sharp razor, and soap up the area-this should eliminate any rash from forming. Waxing can be really good it just takes a bit of practice. there are also creams you can use to disolve the hair, it lasts about the same time as shaving, but the skin feels and looks very nice.
