 it doesn't mean you are in with a chance. i'm sorry but just because he has split with his girlfriend doesn't mean he'll replace her with you and if he does it's because he's on the rebound. he'll use you when it suits and then when something better comes along, you'll be out in the cold again.. and the cycle will continue every time unless you gain some self respect and dignity.
