 I've found that going to somewhere you can actually sit and talk is good for a first date - go for a meal, drink, etc.
If you go to somewhere like the pictures, then you will both spend most of the time sitting in silnce watching the film and come away knowing as much about each other as you did when you went in!
What about something which you can both take an active part - bowling, ice skating, amusement park, etc? That way you can get to know each other and have fun at the same time?
