Sometimes we are lovers...sometimes we are not...what should I do??

Guy I am dating is an alcoholic. We have been together for 8 months now. He says we are very good friends but notting else. He has two personalities. When he is drunk he is very affectionate and says we are lovers but when he is sober he is distant and says we are just two people who care about each other very much but not lover or boyfriend girlfriend. He says that he loves me very much and does not know if we will ever be more than what we are now that he cannot be in love with anybody right now. I am in love with him and want him to take control of the drinking because of his health. But I am afraid I will loose whatever it is that we have. Sometimes I feel like walking away but I cant. He was cheated on hurt by an ex-girl before so Im assuming thats the issue. I am in love with him and not sure what I should do. He says he is not sure if we would ever be more than friends.
