Paranormal Activity?

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I feel like I'm going crazy. I'm so scared right now and I suppose I've been feeling uneasy for some time, I've just been trying to ignore it... But I’m really starting to think that there might be something in my house.

It started off small. The feeling of being watched, my skin crawling and hair on my arms standing on end for no reason. Then it started getting weird when I showered.

My dog (an 8 month old BC cross) follows me everywhere and will often come into the bathroom to sit with me while I shower. She usually does this without fuss and falls asleep on the bathmat 9 times out of 10. Recently, she's started becoming restless and tries to get into the shower with me, whining and scratching at the glass, then turning to stare at empty air. I thought nothing of it, thinking maybe she's due to come into heat. But for the past week or so, she's started growling really low in her throat and her hackles will rise all along her body and right down to the tip of her tail. The last time she pushed her way into the shower and sat beneath my legs, growling at something just outside the shower. Both times she's reacted this badly, the air around me has gone from warm and steamy to freezing and clear in seconds and I've ended up getting out because I feel the need to run away.

And then last night really topped it off. I was so scared I couldn't even breathe properly… Just as I was about to fall asleep, I felt a random pressure on my legs. I ignored it at first, thinking it was just the sheet settling on me more (even though I'd been in bed for around an hour or so), but then it felt like something was slowly crawling up my legs, like the feeling/pressure of hands moving up my body... I called to my boyfriend to wake him up and it started getting faster, a heavy weight sitting on my chest and I felt the covers being pulled from my body. I started to panic because my boyfriend wasn't waking up, so I screamed, but then everything stopped as soon as Darryl woke up and spoke to me. The covers where half way down my body and my skin was so cold compared to my boyfriends’.

Of course I was in hysterics and now I'm afraid to be in the house on my own. I don't usually believe in the paranormal but it was so real, so vivid and so intense that I can't help but feel like something is messing with me. What do I do? Am I going crazy? Please help me :(

What you experienced was most likely sleep paralysis. It is a quite common phenomenon, and it happened to me many times. Google it and you'll find tons of information. I know how terrifying it feels, but once you know more about it, it is not such a big deal.

Sleep paralysis is often accompanied with the feeling of an evil presence and seems incredibly real. Once I felt something was dragging me towards the end of the bed and then I was on the floor and then I woke up to find I was still in my bed. My mom experienced something very similar to what you have described, pressure on her legs like somebody was grabbing her.

People who do not believe in paranormal activity will be the ones telling you there may be a gas leak, but as someone who has experioenced paranormal activity I think there is definetely something in your house and its targeting you. Do you mess with psychics, tarot cards or "the other side"? All these things open yourself and your home up to demonic activity. Get in contact with a few churches because ministers DO get rid of these kind of presences in homes regularly. I stayed in my auntys house for the summer a few years ago and that place is definetly haunted. My mother wouldn't sleep alone and my auntys children were frightened of things they couldn't explain (they eventually moved) I was the only one not effected nor touched by anything in the house and I did pray regularly and ask god to protect me. The next time you feel you are being targeted, even if you are not religious, start praying and ask god to protect you until you can get this thing out of your home. It might sound silly but what have you got to lose? And I'm sure you never believed you could be tormented by something you can't see, the same way you can be saved by someone you can't see.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (21 December 2011):

If you have a gas boiler do have a safety check done. Its a free check if you say you think you can smell gas. And buy a carbon monoxide alarm. The fitting instructons come with it. They are easy to install. Next check your bathroom for any spying devices such as pin hole cameras. Some strange folk have been known to spy on people using those devices so give the bathroom a thorough check.

If the checks reveal nothing then it could be your imagination. My father told me a ghost story when i was young about a man being pushed down the stairs by a ghost. It really gave me the creeps and for years on and off, when i was feeling tired or stressed. I would sometimes have a horrible sense that i was going to be pushed as i went downstairs. So thanks for that, dad!

The mind is a powerful thing and if you have been scared by horror films recently it might expain why you feel scared in the shower. Your dog can pick up on your moods even ones of fear. He or she might not know what there is to be scared of but sensing you are frightened he or she can become frightened too.

If you are suffering from anxiety, you might be having night terrors. There is a state between sleep and fully awake. When asleep our bodies lose normal movement. They are held still for us while we rest. Sometimes our brains wake up before our bodies do. That can be quite frightening because our minds are seemingly awake while the body is immovable. That can give rise to the feeling that we are being held down, sat on or trapped by something. I think this might be what you experienced. The feeling of not being able to move, the terror that causes. The feeling that you are shouting but your partner doesnt hear you at first. Then as you wake fully and movement comes back to you, theres relief mixed with fear. They are called night terrors for good

reason! A trip to the doctor should reassure you about that. You arent going crazy at all. You just need a little reassurance and maybe a check up for anxiety.

Anonymous 123 agony auntI'll be honest with you, normally the first reaction on reading a post like this is, "are you kidding me"!! But obviously something's amiss, because you are the one facing it and its apparent that you are distressed.

First and foremost, rule out the possibility of a gas leak, as suggested by the other aunts. Check all electrical fittings, rule out any problem that could potentially be causing this.

Does your Bf believe you when you tell him that something's wrong? More often than not, people tend to dismiss these things as hallucinations or figments of imagination.

Pray. There's immeasurable power in it. Whether or not there is paranormal activity, it will give you strength

Moo's Mum agony auntI would definately get someone in to cleanse the house. A priest or medium or someone like that. It sounds creepy I would be frightened too. My other two suggestions are to sit on your bed and speak out loud asking the spirit what he/she wants and then to please leave you alone now. Also you could try some Feng Sheui (not sure if that's spelt properly) on your house as this could also help. All the best hope you get rid of the pesky spirit!

Tisha's right this sounds like it could a gas leak somewhere in your house or some kind of environmental hazard.

Dogs have very keen senses they will detect things like that very early and will try to warn you.

This paranormal effect you talk about could well be mild (I use term loosely of course) hallucinations caused by some kind of gas leak in your house.

Act now to discount the possibilities of your house representing a physical hazard OP, I'm sure you've seen the news stories, it's worth ensuring it's not that and if all other potential hazards check out okay.

If the house is safe and the problem still persists then give these guys a call.

A reader, anonymous, writes (21 December 2011):

When I was really little me and my family lived in this house (I was only 4 when we moved), so I don't have much memory of it. But my dad had actually been seeing ghosts for years in that house and he'd sworn he seen actual human figures. He's told so many people of all the stories that happened in that house it became a regular party teller. My mom and brother also witnessed clocks falling off the walls, plants shaking, doors opening and even music coming on out the blue.

My mom never actually seen anything, although she explained the once which is very similar to your story that she felt a huge weight/pressure on her legs whilst being in bed the once and she was terrified, woke up my dad and it stopped.

Despite my family being strong believers in ghosts/spirits, I strangely do not believe in them. I believe it's something to do with your mind playing tricks on you when you're tired or in general etc. I would certainly believe it if I seen it for myself though.

I'm not going to say there's any 'spirits' in your house as I said I don't believe in it and I don't want to scare you or anything. It could be down to you feeling paranoid, you have to remember as soon as you have something in your head, you then start seeing it/thinking it etc. Like for example how some people could say the number '89' follows them around because they see it everywhere, but I see it as that number follows them around because it's in there head to recognise it, if the number '31' was in their head, they'd start seeing that number everywhere.

So perhaps because you've now got it in your head that there's something weird happening in your house, the littlest things that do happen become a bigger deal such as the room getting chilly, hearing a noise etc, etc.

You're certainly not going crazy, this happens to people all the time I've done it myself!

As for the dog thing, my boyfriend's dog does that all the time, my boyfriend says she does it to 'guard you', cus she's like that and my own dog always looks into thin air for no reason.

It's not for me to say if you have any 'spirits' in your house but the day you do start seeing actual figures, I'd start believing.

A reader, anonymous, writes (21 December 2011):

Having the Life I have experienced, I will say that there are things that people do not wish to acknowledge so they chalk it up to paranormal or an over active imagination.

But to you, your local reality; we are no one to judge. You trust your own mind and experience. If you say something is not right, then it isn't. If you feel fear, than that is a 100 000 years of instincts kicking in, telling you there is something to be fearful of.

Just like the same heightened instinct your Dog is demonstrating.

I wouldn't discount it.

Ask for the history of your house/home? I'm not sure how it is in the UK but in Canada, we have something called full disclosure, meaning if there was a murder or frequent complaints prior to you living there- they have to inform you of such things.

Do you believe in the power of prayer?

What about cleansings?

From what I have read in the Bible, to cast out an unclean spirit or devil, entity...

You must call on the Saviours Name and tell the spirit to depart.

Something kin to "In the Name of The Saviour Jesus Christ leave this place and leave me be." May have to say it a few times.

Also I would ask for a blessing from a Priesthood holder. They do have such a thing in the LDS chruch and you can ask your local Missionaries/Elders for aid.

I only offer the LDS church and authority because I was raised in it and know of it and its effectiveness.

I asked you about prayer. You could offer a nightly prayer to Heavenly Father in the Saviours name to have the spirit of protection rest on your home and that no harm will come to you. Again, you can ask a LDS Missionary on how to pray and even ask them to come over and offer a prayer as they hold the priesthood to address your concerns.

Thats all that I can offer you at this time.

Hang in there.

Tisha-1 agony auntGo buy a carbon monoxide monitor and be sure your smoke detectors are functional. I've heard of dogs acting like this and the physical symptoms you describe might be an indication you have a nasty leak from the furnace.
