A female reader, anonymous, writes (29 August 2009):

You may have a condition called social phobia. It generally starts to materialise around that age, puberty and can get worse if you let it. The main fear at this age is fear of failure. I suffered from the same thing. My confidence grew when I was used as an umpire of softball and generaly coached kids of my age level or younger. I found this lifted my knowledge of the game and also helped me to gain my peers respect, which is the main thing. I also used to captain a lower grade of Netball team, (ie not A,B sides but an E grade) but this also was a confidence booster. Our team won a lot of games and eventually I was moved up to the B side. Start to build your confidence, get involved in things at maybe a lower level to start and then move up as your confidence grows. You will be good at some things, but not all, so concentrate on what you love and it will show.
