My trekkie friend...

Question - (15 May 2009) 2 Answers - (Newest, 16 May 2009)
A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I am exactly twenty-two years and two weeks old, my best friend is just over twenty-two years and four months old. My best friend is a man we shall call "Quinton". He and I have been in acquaintance with each other for a little over twenty years; we have been "best friends" since the seventh grade. We both did very well all throughout our education and were both part of the Math and Chemistry Teams in both high school and college, so it was quite easy to stay in contact throughout these past few years.

The realization that we are more than just good friends - and I mean this only in terms that we are closer to each other than that to our peers - was when we both became overwhelmed with excitement when a Star Trek convention was held in our area some ten years ago. We both grew up around that whole world, you see. My father being a Trekkie himself when he was growing up and both of "Quinton's" parents actually met at a convention some twenty-seven years ago.

I know all of this already sounds geeky or nerdy to the extreme and it is, I'll admit that. But my real complication lies here: "Quinton" and I went to see the Star Trek film that just came out last Friday; after watching it, I came to the realization that the feelings I had toward the fictional character, Spock, since I was just in elementary school are turning into something else. I fell in love with his prodigious intelligence, and, if you please, his looks.

Since we saw the film, however, "Quinton" has been acting quite strangely around me. Especially when I bring up the fact that I think Spock is amazing. The man who plays the character is Zachary Quinto and honestly, I think he looks better as Spock, haha. Now, I've never been the best interpreter of men and the way they think; I've never had the time or the elegance to even date. It was always "Quinton" and I hanging out all the time since the seventh grade.

Anyhow, I'm just wondering why "Quinton" suddenly finds one of his own favorite characters to be repulsive now. I've always really liked Spock, it's just now I'm actually expressing how much and why I like the character. I thought "Quinton" would agree with me, albeit the looks part, haha. I mean, lately he's been citing all of Spock's weaknesses and telling me he could take Spock any day... but then, he starts speaking the Spock would.

What's slightly strange about that is that whenever "Quinton" does speak that way, I get slightly turned on. Many would find that to be highly disturbing. Do you? And what should I think of "Quinton's" behavior, it's really starting to perturb me. Thank you to anyone who can interpret this.

TasteofIndia agony auntOh, Quinton is just completely jealous of all the attention you're giving Spock. Maybe Spock has helped you out here, and is making his feelings more clear about you. I say go for it, try it out - if you and Quinton are so close and have so much in common, dating seems like it would work out. You're already compatible!

bobbles32 agony auntFrom an outsiders point of view, it sounds like your friend is jealous because of all the attention you're giving spock. He could be jealous because he's an overprotective friend, or because he has deeper feelings for you.

Did you share a popcorn? :p haha
