My son had 27 bottles of slimming pills in his room... Why?

A female , anonymous writes:

I am a mother of two. My sons are 16 and 21.

When I was cleaning out the house the other day, I found 20 bottles of slimming pills in my 16-year-old son's room. (They were all unopened by the way)

I also found 7 more bottles of slimming pills under his bed as well - all unopened, as with the other ones.

I have no idea how he got them or even why he had 20 bottles in a cupboard in his bedroom. I fear he was going to consume them somehow.

I can't confront him about it at the moment as he is on a school trip abroad in Europe. I worry he'll be buying more slimming pills while he's there.

My 16-year-old son isn't obese, or overweight, so he has no need to use them - I can't understand why he stored them in his cupboard.

I've tried speaking to my husband about the problem but he dismisses it as ridiculous that our 16-year-old son would even stash slimming pills away.

What are we meant to do about this problem? And why would a 16-year-old boy have 27 bottles of slimming pills in his bedroom anyway??

Please help me, I would appreciate it if anyone could help - your advice would be invaluable.

Patricia

P.S. I live in Great Britain, if that is of any help to you.

You sound extremly anxious about your son1

I would speak to him when he comes home from his trip, your husband seems to be ignoring the problem, you dont say what type of pills they are, could he be using them as a high? have you noticed changes in behaviour/mood swings etc

Have a look on the internet to see if you can find out what the pills contain and if they are legal/illegal slimming pills

be sensitive when approaching your son, he may become defensive as you have been in his room, he may feel you've been snooping around!

I wish you luck and hope your son is well!!

A female reader, Bev Conolly Australia +, writes (27 September 2005):

Bev Conolly agony auntA couple of thoughts come to my mind.

First is that your son may have hoarded these pills because of some perception about his own appearance. Maybe he has a feeling that he's getting fat and sees these pills as a "security blanket" he can use.

The second thought is that he might be supplying the pills for the component chemicals in them. It depends completely on the product, but many commercial preparations contain caffeine and other stimulants. Pharmaceuticals might even contain derivatives of amphetamine. There could be quite a demand for these things at your son's school, or amongst his friends for "party" drugs.

My suggestion would be, firstly, to gather up all 27 bottles and put them somewhere secure. There is no way on earth that your son needs all these... not if he has any legitimate problem, anyway. Secondly, I'd want to take a bottle to the local pharmacist and ask about the active ingredient, to get an insight as to why your son has collected so many bottles.

Third, you need to speak to your husband about the seriousness of this problem and be sure that he's not in denial about it. From what you've written, your son is either abusing these chemicals himself, or he could be supplying them illegally to others. Either way, that's pretty worrying and you and your husband need to present a united front against it.

When your son comes home, you and your husband both need to address him about this discovery and ask for an explanation. While there's no certainty that he's been doing anything illegal, you need to find out what this is all about before any problems escalate further.

Good luck with it.
