My friends are away during holidays and I'm tired of being alone, what can I do?

A female Canada age 30-35, anonymous writes:

my best friends and my brother are on holiday, my parents are working full time everyday, my boyfriend dumped me and all other family members are a billion miles away...all i have are my dogs and my horses basically.

I'm usually okay with being on my own but now I'm just so sick of it! I just wish i had someone to talk to. Properly talk to, not over the phone or through e-mail. I think I'm going to go nuts! What can i do?

PS: I'm also under strict orders from my mum not to leave the house for more than four hours because I'm babysitting our litter of puppies (they are only 3 weeks old and can already escape the whelping box!)

Uncle Sneaker agony auntBeing alone and coping with it is a skill that nearly all of us have to learn at some point in our lives. It can be tough, but once you get that skill so it doesn't worry you any more is an achievement you can be proud of if you can do it.

That's not what you wanted to hear, is it? Sorry! Actually, you're not alone - as you've just proved by asking that question and getting these answers. I know it's not the same as talking face to face, but with all the communication these days - telephone, Internet etc - and the range of entertainment like books and television that everyone has access to - it's not like you ever need to be really alone.

Oceania agony auntyou can go to some public places, where you can meet new people. Try to make friends, maybe first on internet later in person.

Or you know you can always try to do things to enjoy yourself on your own. I mean watching movies, reading a book, listening to music, dance, maybe some hobbies, riding your horses, playing with your dogs, something to make you less lonely, at least until everyone comebacks.

Join a club or something, somewhere you can meet new people and then you will have a new bunch of friends to hang around with when the others are busy. You'll make friends easily especially if noone knows anyone there very well.
