My friend has messages on her phone from the guy that I like that say "I love you". She says its just a joke. Should I believe it?

hi!just want to ask for some piece of advice..the situation goes like this: I have a guy friend let's just call him RC and a girl friend by the name of MAE. the three of us are very close friends.we use to hang-out during our free time or after our work. and as time goes by i started to fall in love with my guy friend..and of course i told it to mae..i tell everything to her, about my feelings for our guy friend and i told her to keep it as a secret..then one time when we were at the guy's house I asked mae if i could use her phone so that i could text my mom..after i have texted i noticed the messages on my friends phone..i noticed that there are a lot of text messages containing the following message:"I LOVE YOU!"and the name of RC in Mae's phone is "hon"..and I cannot believe what I just saw..I want cry but I cannot..and that same night i texted mae and asked her about what i saw in her phone and she told that it was just her petname for RC and they it's just a joke for them. that's what she keeps on telling me..and until now it still bothers me if it is true or not..i don't know if i will still trust them or not..my question is "should i believe what mae is telling me or should i not?"hope you could help me..thanks!!
