Hey, my father is the most annoying person I ever met, he wants to know why I have a piercing in my ear, according to him only homosexuals have it there, am I wrong for telling him he has to learn how to be a better father instead of worring of what's not important or shall I just listen to him and take it as advice?

HotANDcold agony auntThanks for the suppport i guess,i should just ignore his ignorance..

i did like your quote "I'd rather look like a homosexual to you then a homophobic porch monkey.(that one is a good one,but if i tell him that i'll probably would be sleeping in the streets hhhahha

All of the answers really helped me,even if he doesnt know how to advice me i should still be respectful to him.

Dad's have some very good advice to give about life as they have been there and done a lot.

They also have a lot of rubbish that they like to make everyone listen to.

You are getting to the age now where as there are 2 men in the house he is going to feel threatened as you are young and strong as he is getting older.

That sounds a bit primitive and insulting but I see it with my hubbie and his dad, there is always some kind of tiny power battle going on.

Your dad wants you to take out your piercing because HE doesn't like it and HE is in charge. He's not though and it's your body, so just smile and say "yeah dad" when he goes on about "homosexuals" and then change the subject, or point out that girls seem to love it.

Ask his advice on things like girls and life (even if you don't take it) as it will show him you still respect him and as long as he knows he still has that then he might chill out.

Good Luck!! xx

A female reader, samsproperty United States +, writes (8 November 2008):

As a default, I would continue wearing the piercing and treat him kindly and respectfully in doing so. If he were to belittle me or put me down because of it, I would warn him that I disengage from those who choose to treat me with disrespect. Ball in his court.

Although, there are the hard learners out there in which dignified speech and kind requests have little result. And in this situations, fire with fire can work. Find something about him that indicates a cultural faux pas, such as his wife beaters. Tell him, if he wears them, his wife beaters and sleeveless shirts make him look like a hate crime freak who screams at people with as many teeth as a jack o lantern headed off to the woods to burn crosses. Make sure you say, "I'd rather look like a homosexual to you then a homophobic porch monkey.

Don't listen to him if he's putting you down pal. Remember you always have a choice.

Neither! It doesn't sound like what he says could be considered good advice and why tell him to be a better father now when you are 18-21 years old. You are an adult and it doesn't really matter what he thinks.
