Lots of questions about b/c pills

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hello!

I have a myriad of questions concerning birth control pills. I know you aunties and uncles aren't doctors, but I would really like to talk to people who have experience with using them (or whose girlfriends do!). I've never used them before, but I'm considering going on them as I don't want to rely on just condoms. I've already had one scare with condoms!

First of all, how much do birth control pills generally cost? Are they covered by insurance at all? Do you HAVE to make an appointment at a Planned Parenthood-like center to get them or is it possible to obtain them from a normal, everyday family physician-type doctor? Also, do you HAVE to have someone poke around at your lady parts (hah!) before they prescribe you birth control?

I'm 20 years old and I've only been sexually active with two people (current boyfriend being the second). As you can imagine, I'm not yet very comfortable with the idea of someone I don't know poking around at me.

More questions. I've heard stories about women who have gained weight due to the pill. Has anyone else had this issue? If so, what pill was it? -- Because I'd like to avoid it! :P Have you or someone you know personally experienced any OTHER unpleasant side effects in relation to the pill?

And lastly, out of curiosity, is it normal for men to help you pay for the pill? I ask this because my current boyfriend actually suggested that I go on it and even offered to pay for it! I personally don't think I will let him contribute to the cost unless the cost is just horrendously, ridiculously high or something. That seemed abnormal (though nice of him, I must say) to me! Is it?

Sorry to tell you this but if you want to stay healthy there will be many times in your life that a doctor or nurse will be poking around with your 'lady' parts. It's not that bad, they don't really think of you in a sexual way and you soon get used to it. There are side effects to any medication and they have to make sure you are not at risk.

Some people put weight on with the pill but there are all different ones and you can go back and say so and get it changed.

I think if you go through the doctor the pill is free.

A female reader, Emilysanswers United Kingdom +, writes (10 June 2009):

I can't answer a lot of your questions as they do things rather differently over here in the UK.

Here, anyone can go and see the family planning people or their GP and after a few questions and a blood pressure test they can stick you on the pill no problem.

As for the side effects though, that I can tell you about.

It's not a case of "good" pills keeping you the same weight and "bad" ones making you fat.

You are messing with your hormones and each pill will have a different affect on each different woman. So try one pill and give it 6 months. If you find you can't get on with it then go back and try another. I've been on about 4 different ones over the last 8 years.

Some will give you headaches, massive PMT, weird periods etc etc. Some will take away all the stuff you were suffering naturally.

It's a case of trying it and seeing.

Good Luck!! xx
