Just friends or more than friends?

A female United States age 22-25, anonymous writes:

I don't know if my best friend likes me or if that's just his personality. We've only known each other for a year and a bit, but already we're so much closer than any guy friends I have ever had. He is very protective/defensive of me, especially when it comes to creeps trying to interact with me. We text and talk to each other every day, and he often chooses to be around me (lunch, sitting next to me, just hanging out) rather than being around his guy friends. Some of the things he says and does I know is just his personality and him caring for me, but then he sometimes will make comments that make me question whether he really does just see me as a friend or more. He has told me many times that he has to get high to hang out in social situations because otherwise its too draining and overwhelming for him, but he never feels the need to do it with me. We have talked a lot about relationships in our conversations, and from all of this I know that he is not actively looking for a relationship, but he also can't stop his heart from wanting one. We have the same sense of humor and we tease one another and banter constantly, riffing back and forth about different inside jokes and conversational topics. I am a fairly shy/introverted person, and he gets dragged to go clubbing with his friends often, and he has said to me that if I ever came along he would keep me safe. Any time I have said relationships may not be for me, he tells me not to rule them out completely. I know that he has had trauma with regards to relationships in the past, and so would not eagerly initiate a relationship. I don't think I can really say that he is interested, but another opinion is always appreciated.
